Sony Finally Fully Unveils Its Android Tabs, The Sony S and P

sony tabs"It's not about who makes them first, but who makes them better." That's how Sony's Sir Howard Stringer announced his upcoming tablets. Zing. Meet the S and P, everyone. Sony just took the wraps off its first generation Android tablets a few moments ago at its 2011 IFA press event. But, as with most non-Apple products these day, there isn't much to report. Sony used teasers and planted leaks over the last few months to generate buzz, which in turn, makes today's announce a tad anticlimactic.

New HIV case causes LA porn industry shutdown (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A porn industry group says an adult film performer has tested positive for HIV, resulting in a production moratorium in Southern California while the organization investigates to see if the virus has spread.

Free Speech Coalition executive director Diane Duke told The Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/mX0vin) on Monday that her group became aware of the HIV case Saturday.

Duke declined to release the performer's name, age or gender. She also declined to tell the Times how her group learned of the case.

According to Duke, the case was found in an out-of-state clinic that doesn't report to California state officials. Duke says the performer is being retested to confirm the HIV.

The group is working to identify others who had sex with the performer.

Will New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez be the Republican Party?s vice presidential nominee? (The Ticket)

Martinez (Susan Montoya Bryan/AP)

By now, you've likely heard Marco Rubio, the Florida senator, and Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor, repeatedly reject entreaties to hypothetically accept the Republican nomination for vice president in 2012. But there's another political newcomer and potential running mate out there with whom you may be less familiar: Susana Martinez, the governor of New Mexico.

Like Christie and Rubio, Martinez is on the shortlist of the Republican Party's rising stars.

"The fact that she is the nation's lone Latina governor has led to talk in political circles of her strong future in the Republican Party, and maybe even as a vice-presidential nominee," Marc Lacey writes Tuesday in a profile of Martinez for the New York Times.

Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who ended his presidential campaign this month, mentioned Martinez by name in January as a potential running mate.

For now, Martinez says she's not interested.

"It's very humbling," Martinez told the Times of the attention she's received--"before," Lacey wrote, "quickly committing herself to her current job."

Just this week, conservatives cheered Martinez's renewal of her concealed-carry permit and circulated a video of the governor in action.

Check out her shooting skills in the video below:

Design Book Cover Free

Although Steve Jobs has repeatedly demonstrated its rejection of the stylus, it is clear that many users do not think so. In fact, lately we are seeing some companies begin to market its face models to provide the iPad new features or improve existing ones. This time it is a project that has not yet seen the light. The company is still looking for investors to materialize. Maglus is a stylus equipped with magnets that allow a "hook" to design book cover free SmartCover iPad or Apple. It also has an elegant design. Anyone who wants to help financially in the project can make a contribution to the company through their website at FUNDIT, where you can also find more information about the product. Great design (in English The Grand Design) is a popular science book written by physicists Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, published in English by U. S. publisher Bantam Books on September 7, 2010-September 9 in the UK and in Spanish by the Review editorial on 15 November 2010. The authors note that the unified field theory (theory based on a model of the early universe, proposed by Albert Einstein and other physicists to unify two different theories considered above) can not be correct. The design book cover free examines the history of scientific knowledge about the universe and explains the 11-dimensional M-theory, a theory favored by many modern physicists. [1]. The authors believe that the invocation of God is not necessary to explain the origin of the universe and the Big Bang is the result only of the scientific laws of physics. [2]. The design book cover free examines the history of scientific knowledge about the universe. It begins with the Greek philosophers, particularly the so-called ionic or physical. some members of the so-called pre-Socratic philosophy, "who claimed that nature was governed by laws and not by the will of the gods. From the Presocratics to jump to Nicolaus Copernicus, who recovers the importance of theoretical laws are consistent with the empirical evidence, forcing him to put the Earth was the center of the universe. [3]. The authors also describe the theory of quantum mechanics using as an example, the likely movement of an electron around a room. [3]. The book's central claim is that the theory of quantum mechanics and relativity theory can help us understand how they could have formed universe from nothing. [3]. Hawking and Mlodinow explains, consistent with the M-theory, that in the same way that the Earth is only one of the planets of the solar system, just like our Milky Way galaxy is just one of many galaxies exist, what The same applies to our universe may be one of many universes. [4] [3]. Even before the book's publication in June 2010, in an interview with ABC News, was asked if Stephen Hawking could imagine a point where science and religion will be found somehow, and Hawking said that "it is more simple North Korea wins the World Cup "and added:" There is a fundamental difference between science and religion. Religion is based on authority, and science is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works. "[5] In September 2010, according to excerpts of his book The Grand Design, published by The Times, Hawking said that a new set of theories becomes superfluous suggest the existence of a Creator of the Universe , that God created the universe and the Big Bang was the inevitable consequence of the laws of physics. "Since there is a law like gravity, the universe could and created out of nothing. The spontaneous creation is the reason that there is something rather than nothing, is the reason why there is the universe that we exist. No need to invoke God as the one who lit the fuse and created the Universe. "[6] [7]. The publication of excerpts from the book written with Leonard Mlodinow The Grand Design, [8] [9], which basically states that God created the universe, caused, even before publication, much controversy and criticism from representatives of many religions. [10] [11] [12]. In response to criticism of his book, Hawking said that "One can not prove that God does not exist, but the science makes God unnecessary" ("One can not Prove That God does not exist, pero Science Make God Unnecessary "). [13] In the interview that appears in the BBC documentary-4-Genius of Britain, says not to believe in a personal God. [14] [15] [16]. ? If a scientist says, goes to church, researchers are divided: some are believers and others think that God is incompatible with science - Is made of the laboratories to demonstrate the existence of God?, "El Pa?s, 5 / 9 / 2010. Choosing the proper landscape designer or landscaping firm isn't really generally quick.

You see, earning the choice to rent a landscape designer generally is a challenging activity. You will find a lot of designers and landscape corporations hustling on your enterprise. To the floor, they might all look to get virtually the identical. A minimal price tag can typically be introduced inside the type of an "estimate" Normally be cautious of such. Instead, insist on the company proposal which particulars the support to become offered and sets forth fixed pricing for anyone solutions. Except a substantial quantity of excavation is concerned, a skilled landscape enterprise need to not possess a dilemma using this style of arrangement.

It's no secret--professional landscape providers base their pricing on a few standard aspects: labor, gear, products and earnings. Nonetheless, you will find also overhead expenditures that you just might not understand. Points like worker uniforms, the worker instruction courses, and lots of other costs that go into bringing you a substantial degree of services. National Restaurant Association Offers Hurricane Preparedness ...

National Restaurant Association Offers Hurricane Preparedness Tips to RestaurantsThe National Restaurant Association is offering its members and the restaurant community at large the following tips to prepare for Hurricane Irene in at-risk areas on the East Coast.

  • The safety of employees and guests is first and foremost. Keep up to date with the latest developments through state and local government sources to determine if and when to close your business.
  • Consider donating surplus food to local shelters and emergency facilities if you are closing your business, as well as when you re-open. Restaurants are often on the front lines in disaster recovery efforts by providing food and water for first responders or displaced residents. Check with disaster relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, local fire departments and your state restaurant associations.
  • Communicate frequently with employees, both before and after the emergency situation. Be sure to inform them of your emergency plan and where to look for information from you. Bear in mind that cell phones may not function during an emergency situation if networks get overloaded or damaged. Text messages (SMS) may work better than phone service. Also, compile a list of employees? personal email addresses (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.) to use in case the restaurant company?s server is damaged.
  • If you don?t have a social media presence already, create a Facebook page and/or other social media channels for your restaurant to use as communications vehicles for employees and patrons.
  • Create a checklist of how to prepare your business for closing quickly. Include procedures for reducing perishable inventory (i.e. clean out walk-ins, ice bins, etc.), securing equipment, and removing critical business records and valuables. Doing this can reduce damage and facilitate re-opening.
  • Save important business documents on a USB drive to keep on hand offsite. Include emergency contacts for employees, business insurance information, and crucial permits, financial and payroll records.
  • Prepare a template news release and a list of key media contacts in your area so that you can quickly get news out about your business status.
  • Familiarize yourself with the inspection process required for re-opening after the emergency. When reentering your restaurant after it is deemed safe, document any damage in photos and/or video for insurance purposes. Do not re-open your business if power and running water are unavailable.
  • Founded in 1919, the National Restaurant Association is the leading business association for the restaurant industry, which comprises 960,000 restaurant and foodservice outlets and a workforce of nearly 13 million employees. Together with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, the Association works to lead America?s restaurant industry into a new era of prosperity, prominence, and participation, enhancing the quality of life for all we serve. O brother, what art thou?

Part 1: Russ Is My Identical Twin. At Least, That's What We've Always Said ?

Updated Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at 1:26 PM ET

Illustration by Charlie Powell. Click image to expand. The buccal smear came all the way from Utah. A company called Affiliated Genetics, which specializes in confirming the zygosity of twins?whether they've been born miraculously from one egg, or coincidentally of two?had provided their "Sample Collection Kit" free of charge. (For non-journalists, the test costs $150.) It lay on my cluttered desk, impassively, a slightly bulging manila envelope the size of a fancy invitation. I considered it with mild disdain and called my twin brother, Russell, whom I had not seen for several days. I wouldn't open the package without him. We planned to meet outside my office, head to Brooklyn, and swab.

You say identical and fraternal, science says monozygotic and dizygotic. Russell and I were born 12 minutes apart at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind., 27 years ago. I'm the elder. According to the family myth, we were something of a windfall: My father, having already raised three sons under a different regime, had set the limit for my childless mother?his new wife?at one. The presumption all along has been that Russell and I are identical, as if our whole lives conformed to that paternal decree. In photographs from our childhood, we are tied with blue and red satin ribbons, and costumed in corresponding French sailor's suits. There are several photos of us dressed in white, hovering over a book of Mother Goose, and nobody?not my mother, not me, not Russell?can tell the two big-headed infants apart. We swapped fourth-grade classes while inviting detection from neither friend nor frau.

And yet: We are not strictly identical. We have our petty discordances, which in their accumulation conspire against us. Suspicion is lured by doubt. In a giant senior-class photo of Russell and me that hangs framed in my old bedroom, we might as well be cousins. I am perched at his left shoulder, looking like my head is balancing on a drinking straw, while his own neck threatens to split his collar. We had long ago compared our fingerprints in vain. He was an All-State high-school quarterback (and an All-American in college), while I sat on the bench for a beleaguered basketball team that couldn't win even five games. Though we've both escaped the primordial sludge of the Ohio River Valley for New York City, no one confuses us anymore. For two years, I've spent $80 a month on a pharmaceutical that will keep me from going bald. We've noticed that I'm slightly taller. That our noses have a slightly different bent. Our penmanship is at odds and his hair is falling out.

Hence the buccal smear! "Over 99% accurate"! Hi-ho!

    ***

Twins these days are an enlightened bunch. For tens of thousands of years?from the first Cro-Magnon birth to roughly the American Civil War?identical and fraternal twins were born unto mothers that hadn't a clue there were essentially two varieties. And even if they did notice that some pairs were as alike as two siblings, and others way more alike than that, they didn't have the language to say it out loud. The idea of wondering what kind of twin you are, let alone testing it in some objective or scientific way, simply didn't exist before, say, the automobile. All twins were beheld under the same banner: unusual, unexplained, and undifferentiated.

The confusion was bound with our ignorance of knowing exactly what was happening in utero. It wasn't until the latter decades of the 19th century that embryologists figured out the basic twinning process: Either two sperm fertilize two eggs, or one egg splits in two. (An earlier notion held that twins arose from two sperm that fertilized an ovum in separate places; obviously a red herring.) In 1875, the statistician Francis Galton interviewed 100 pairs of same-age, same-sex siblings, along with their close relatives, and concluded, "Twins is a vague expression." Though not quite a zygotic eureka, he found that extreme similarity among twins was just as common as a moderate resemblance, or hardly any resemblance at all. Even through the embryonic fog, it was clear something elemental divided at least the extremely similar from all the rest. By 1911, the usage of fraternal, as it relates to twins, had entered English usage, and the lexicography of mono- and dizygotic followed five years later.

Galton's work led to the establishment of the twin method, which proved the foundation for investigations into those dubious sciences called behavioral and eugenic. It also corroborated something that would have been apparent to the era's midwives and cowboys: Not every pair of twins comes into the world trailing the same debris. If you're witness to enough twin births?among humans or cattle?you're likely to notice certain differences from one to the next; that some pairs are born with a single placenta, that others have two placentas fused together, and still more spring from the womb with one placenta each.

For twins ourselves, realizing we came in two distinct types no doubt encouraged us to glom onto studies that could say who and what we were. There was an element of flattery (I'm gonna be an experiment!), and?as genetics took hold?of practicality ("I'm gonna give my brother a kidney!"), but perhaps also a spirit of competition: Who among us can truly lay claim to all the mystical mumbo-jumbo about a shared identity? Will the real mutation please stand up?

Early twin tests spanned the mundane to the violent: Are your earlobes attached or unattached? Do you share the same blood type? Do your palm-prints match? Your fingerprints? Your handwriting? Will your body accept a chunk of your sibling's skin, or will it repulse the alien, the fraternal, tissue? (The Nazi doctor Josef Mengele's torturous prodding of identical twins perverted a curiosity sweeping the globe).

And then there was the old cowboy's trick: Beginning in the 1940s, parents were told of zygosity in the delivery room, judging by the placenta(s) and the amniotic sac(s). It's more complicated than it seems, though: Every "monochorionic" twin birth is monozygotic, but only 70 percent of "dichorionic" births are dizygotic.

As science looked for more cost-effective ways to divine zygotic history, blood tests and other lab work gave way to surveys that combined objective measurements?height, weight, tone of voice, etc.?with questions about how the pairs were perceived. Were they confused for each other by teachers and friends? Parents? Strangers? But even that proved more in-depth than necessary. In a 1961 study by a Swedish scientist named Rune Cederlof, the whole exam hinged upon a single, probing question: "When growing up, were you and your twin 'as like as two peas' or of ordinary family likeness only?"

It turned out that whether twins thought they'd been "as like as two peas" could predict the results of every other available test with surprising accuracy. Cederlof found that the twins' answers to this one item on the questionnaire matched overwhelmingly with five independent measures of blood type. After nearly 100 years, our finest scientists realized that discerning a man's zygotic origin was about as easy as discerning whether he was ill by asking if he had a runny nose.

The examination of DNA, then, may be an entirely superfluous reassurance: like searching for witnesses to a murder when the act itself was caught on tape.

    ***

My mother claims her placenta never received the appropriate inspection before Russell and I were carried home, swaddled and bruised. No blood test, either. She used to tell us the gruesome detritus had been, of all things, frozen. We have grown up with the image of our birth matter languishing in an ice-cube tray, and wrung our hands in secret. What would it mean if we weren't who we thought we were?

On the walk around the corner from the subway to my Brooklyn apartment, with Russell pawing the lush crown of my fertilized head, I ask him if he thinks we were as alike as two peas in a pod, and he says yes. Did people confuse us? Yes. Did we suffer similar physiological pratfalls (acne, chicken pox) at roughly the same time? We did. By all accounts, we don't need Affiliated Genetics. By all accounts, it's inconceivable that we are something other than what we suspected as children.

Indeed, that's the only comfort when staring down the buccal smear: treating the thing as mere confirmation, a technological novelty. The idea that we might be fraternal makes me feel guilty and unnerved, like we've stolen a painting and hid it hastily in the attic. My god, our whole lives we've thought ourselves superior to that bovine herd of same-age siblings. We've built our personas around the assumption that the two of us were once the same collection of cells. How could I face anyone, even Russell, knowing we weren't?

I protest too much. My temple throbs as we sit at my dining room table and read the instructions for the sample collection. No one wants to have lived a fiction. A faulty premise patterns a thousand more lies. We scrub the inside of our cheeks, laughing for the absurdity, and nervous as hell.

Slate contacted seven pairs of twins who underwent commercial zygosity testing, including the author and his brother. Photographs of each pair are presented below, along with the twins' guesses for how their tests would turn out. Make your own predictions, and then look for the results in Part 2.

There is More than One Way to be a Good Mom

??? The word vocation means a ?call.? In Catholic circles, it refers to a call from God. Many women receive a call from God to motherhood. It is a noble call, a challenging call, a call that will frequently bring a woman to her personal limits and to her knees in prayer. Yet, it has immense rewards. Those of us who have been called to this life should be both thankful for and humbled by it.

Given that it is such a hard job, motherhood should be supported by all of us, in all its forms. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. While the outside world may be very supportive of working mothers, in Catholic circles, it is often seen as a ?lesser? choice.

If a mother ?needs? to work, then it is acceptable, but even then I?ve heard other mothers say that they feel sorry for these mothers. The woman who chooses to work? She is frequently portrayed as selfish and not putting her family first. It is as if there is one version of motherhood that is held up as the ideal ? the stay-at-home totally dedicated mother (if you managed to nurse exclusively for at least a year, homeschool your children, and have four or more children, you get extra points) ? and all the others fall a little short.

As a homeschooling stay-at-home mother, I am begging people to reconsider that position. I believe that I have been called to my current way of life for this season of my life. It certainly wasn?t in the life plan that I had for myself. Rather, God led me here. I am very fortunate to be able to work part-time from home. My situation was different in my past, and it may be different in my future. I hope to always do what God wants from me.

Is it then possible to believe that others are called to different forms of motherhood?? I would argue that it is. Learning about St. Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) expanded my own understanding of the vocation of motherhood. She is a patron saint of working mothers. She was an accomplished physician who loved her work. She truly felt called by God to be a doctor. She continued to maintain her own practice while having three small children.

St. Gianna would ultimately give up her own life so that her 4th child might live. That child followed in her mother?s footsteps and became a doctor herself. On the subject of vocation, St. Gianna wrote ?What is a vocation? It is a gift from God, so it comes from God. If it is a gift from God, our concern must be to know God?s will. We must enter that path: If God wants, when God wants, how God wants.? God called St. Gianna to be both doctor and mother. She served God completely in both roles.

On a related note, Pope Benedict XVI recently stated that ?it is necessary to concretely support motherhood, including guaranteeing professional women the possibility of balancing family and work. Too often, in fact, women are put in the position of having to choose between the two.? He encouraged governments to support maternity rights, including child-care centers.

God calls mothers to different forms of motherhood. Women should always pray to do God?s will in their lives. At the same time, all mothers should be supported and encouraged in their vocation, whether that vocation involves being a stay-at-home homeschooling mom, working full-time outside the home or any of the variations in-between. There is no one right way to be a mother. The only right way is what God is calling a mother to do at a given moment of her life.

John H. Adler Fund to Finance Research on Veterans' Affairs ...

August 24, 2011, 9:11 am By THE NEW YORK TIMES

The family of the late John Adler, a former New Jersey politician, have created a fund to support research into veterans? affairs at Harvard, the university said.

The John H. Adler Memorial Fund for Veterans? Affairs will be based out of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, but grants will be available for research and programs at all schools at the university.

?It is our family?s intent to continue John?s legacy of respect and support for veterans,? Mr. Adler?s widow, Shelley, said in a statement. ?It is a population that is sometimes sadly neglected, despite the tremendous personal sacrifices made by those individuals and their families. This fund will lead to better governmental treatment of our service men and women after they are no longer in active duty.?

Mr. Adler who would have turned 52 on Tuesday, when the fund was announced, died in April after contracting an infection in the tissue around his heart. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he had served in the New Jersey State Senate and one term in Congress from a district in southern New Jersey. He was on the House veterans? affairs committee while in Congress.

An associate dean for the Kennedy School, Melodie Jackson, said that the family had started the fund with a ?generous gift,? but she could not disclose the amount. Ms. Jackson said the family?s goal is to raise enough additional money to create an endowment. She said it was not clear when the first grants would be issued.

Contributions to the fund can be sent to:
Harvard University, Office of the Recording Secretary,
    124 Mt. Auburn Street
    4th Floor

The Need For A Miter Discovered | Home and Family

    ?

The miter saw has caused so much excitement like the just one no other woodworking device has ever done. This is a great tool especially for DIY woodworking enthusiasts, who need to experiment with many joints and cuts for their woodworking projects. The ??miter saws assist you to make creative cuts on wood as no other saw would. Some of the patterns that you can make using a miter saw add some angled cross cuts including those used on image frames, and dovetail cuts to make dovetail joints. Interestingly, the miter saws derive their name through the miter joints, which will be the slanting joints used in joining the pieces of a picture frame. Miter saws can be purchased in both manual and electro-mechanical kinds.

    The Manual Miter Observed

The manual ?miter saw can be a basic backsaw that is mounted on a metal base. This backsaw is attached in their normal manner that it can rotate freely, in order make it possible for precision cutting. The manual miter saw is very popular with most woodworking classes, especially DIY workshops, because affordability. To use the particular manual miter saw, you will need to fasten the piece of wood to get cut using a vice clamp. Then you can fix the cutting angle that you intend to make using guiding supports.

Some woodworking workshops still develop the predecessor to the miter discovered; a tool commonly generally known as the miter box. The miter box is a tool that has available ends and tops that have guiding slots cut straight into them at angles involving either 45 or three months degrees. Piece of wood which have been being worked on they fit inside the box, along with the saw inserted into the guiding slots.

    The Electric Miter Saw

Large woodworking workshops are likely to have both manual miter saws as well as powered miter saws. The reason being the manual miter saws can only be used on the small jobs. When it comes towards larger commercial projects, one has to train on a powered miter saw mainly because it is more efficient and precise. The powered miter saws are relatively expensive when compared with the manual variety; for that reason, a substantial investment needs to be made to acquire 1. With the powered miters saws, a circular saw is placed on an aluminum base. It possible to adjust the position of the saw about the base, in order to realize any desired angle.

There is numerous powered miter saws, like the sliding saw and compound saw. The sliding saw is the most famous, due to its ability to exceed its own height when cutting wood items. It is able to achieve this because it is fitted over a sliding rail. A compound powered miter saw alternatively, allows for higher perfection in cutting, since it can simultaneously rotate and tilt your blade while cutting.

    Typical Brands of Miter Saws

Some of the common brands of miter saws are the Milwaukee 6955-20 12-Inch Dropping Dual Bevel Miter Discovered, DEWALT DW715 15-Amp 12-Inch Substance Miter saw, Ridgid MS1065LZA Found, 10-Inch Compound Miter with Laser, and Hitachi C10FCE2 10-Inch Chemical substance Miter Saw.

Italian Cuisine: A Trip to the Island of Sardinia | spanishchef.net

    Spanishchef.net recommends these products

    Italian

The island of Sardinia perhaps most quickly conjures up the idea of sardines. A small island off of the western coast of Italy, it certainly incorporates seafood in to much of its regional cuisine. However, Sardinia has such a rich and various history that it bears little resemblance to the traditional idea of Italian cooking. Like many other Italian regional cuisines, Sardinia?s regional taste is often a surprise for a palette that is expecting red sauce and parmesan cheese to be the beginning and end of traditional Italian cooking. While it is a region of Italy, Sardinia?s history is shared with explorers of many European nations, such as Greece, France, and Spain. This diverse history of people shows in the traditions and culture of this isolated island destination.

While, being an island, seafood, especially shellfish, plays a large part in the regional cuisine of Sardinia, very few Sardinian meals do not incorporate lamb, a rich resource in the mountainous inland of the island of Sardinia. In addition to the lamb?s meat, a favourite of Sardinian chefs, very few meals are complete without the company of sheep?s milk and wild fennel. Stews and roasts are popular choices for the people of Sardinia. Looking at any Sardinian recipe, it is easy to see that the cuisine of this hilly island is a veritable stone soup of the many different cultures that have passed through the island over the years.

The seafood traditions of the Greek isles can be found in the mussel stews and roasted lobster dishes that keep the island?s fishermen busy. Malloreddus is a Sardinian pasta that can be found in many stews and pasta dishes accompanying chicken or rabbit basted in fennel or saffron. Malloreddus is a grooved pasta that very much resembles gnocchi in taste and texture, and is made of semolina flour and sometimes seasoned lightly with saffron, while most gnocchi is made with potato.

Stews are very popular in the regional cuisine of Sardinia, and even meat and poultry dishes are served in rich cooking sauces that could just as easily be served as soups. For this reason, accompanying a Sardinian entr?e with a hearty crusted bread or a side of potatoes makes for a very filling meal. Pasta, in the traditional sense is not as large a part of Sardinian cooking as in other regions of Italy. The pastas of Sardinia are more commonly associated with Middle Eastern cuisine. Hearty grains and fusilli more commonly accompany the dishes of Sardinian regional cuisine, as opposed the lasagne, spaghetti or linguine that Americans more commonly associate with Italian cooking.

Between the diverse history of Sardinia?s people, from France to the Middle East, and the various different landscapes and resources that can be found throughout the island, it is hard to put Sardinian cuisine into one category. One thing is for sure though, while you will find many different types of food on the island of Sardinia, it is unlikely that you will find anything like it anywhere else in the world.

Five Things Students Say They Want From Education ? Education ...

If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. Abraham Maslow

This article is a list of 5 things that students say they want from education. I?want to point out that the current education system isn?t designed to give it to them.

    5. Interactive Technology

Students actually go through withdrawl when they can?t use their cellphones and devices. They use these tools as part of their everyday lives. They want to do this in school, but many schools are afraid and tell them to put them away.

    4. Teacher Mentors

The classroom model was designed with the understanding that the teacher and textbook were the providers of information. That clearly has been made obsolete by the Internet. Students grasp this and are skeptical of anyone who stands up in front of them and says ?put away your phones and listen to me?. You can?t teach Google.

    3. Innovation

Students want their learning to be fun and why shouldn?t it be? You learn better when you are a. relaxed and b. interested. Note that I?believe there is a difference between entertaining the students and making learning fun.

Issac Asimov talked about this 20 years ago:

Once we have computer outlets in every home, each of them hooked up to enormous libraries where anyone can ask any question and be given answers, be given reference materials, be something you?re interested in knowing, from an early age, however silly it might seem to someone else? that?s what YOU are interested in, and you can ask, and you can find out, and you can do it in your own home, at your own speed, in your own direction, in your own time? Then, everyone would enjoy learning. Nowadays, what people call learning is forced on you, and everyone is forced to learn the same thing on the same day at the same speed in class, and everyone is different.? ? Issac Asimov

The man was ahead of his time.

    2. Choice

This is simply who is directing the learning. If it?s the state, then put the kids in a classroom and keep going the same way. If it?s the learner, then the whole mass schooling model blows apart. (which I?view as inevitable)

    1. Real world relevancy

If you want real world relevancy then you need to be out in the real world. Lesson plans need to be more improvised with more self direction. However, as long as we have such a focus on standardized tests, teacher?s hands will be tied.

The take away from this is if a viable alternative emerges to public education, the students will be eager to jump on it. Remember, schools aren?t like businesses. A business has to keep it?s customers happy so will change with times. Schools have customers because they are forced attend. As long as the bills get paid, schools have no incentive to change.

I?m interested in any other takes on these points. Any comments?

    • List of responses from teachers about what students want.

tags: education list students pedagogy nell

      • We recently asked eSchool News readers: ?What?s the one thing you hear most often from students about what they want in school??

      • Though the responses were numerous, readers repeated these five things students want the most

      • 5. Interactive technology

      • ?A teacher who respects and cares about them, a teacher who engages them in learning rather than constantly ?telling? them what they should learn, and a curriculum that explains the ?what? and ?why? and connects it to their lives.? ?Gary S. Mathews, Ph.D., superintendent, Newton County School System, Georgia

      • ?We do an exit survey with our seniors, and the one comment I hear most often is the teacher is ?boring.? Why can?t they make the class interesting? I understand that there are tests, etc., but one could still make the class a welcoming place instead of a dreaded one.?The teachers [who] are still using overhead projectors?should be run out of town!?Are they modeling acceptance of change??Nope, not when they?re stuck in the 70?s.?? ?Barbara A. Jimerson, title VII director, Gowanda School District, New York

      • ?The one thing that students want most in school can be summed up in one word: Choice.? ?Tricia George, principal, Sojourner School, North Clackamas School District, Oregon

      • 1. Real-world application and relevancy

      • ?Most often heard from students: ?Why do I need to know this??? ?Anne Seifert

      • ?Our students truly desire educational experiences outside the classroom. They desire to see and experience, first-hand, how they can apply their learning with real-world experiences during the normal school day.? ?Paul M. Rutherford, Ph.D., Summit Technology Academy, Lee?s Summit R7

HBT: 'I've never seen a white man run that fast'

Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos has been one of the most underrated players in baseball this season, combining exceptional defense with surprisingly strong hitting to rank 11th among AL position players in Wins Above Replacement.

Ozzie Guillen came to appreciate Bourjos after the Angels swept a two-game series against the White Sox this week, heaping praise on the 24-year-old center fielder:

Oh my god, he can be my favorite player. I?ve never seen a white man that can run that fast. It is really impressive. That man might be the fastest person in baseball right now.

Bourjos hasn?t quite mastered stealing bases, going 17-for-23 so far, but there?s no one faster running to first base or going first-to-third, and Ultimate Zone Rating says he?s been 10.2 runs above average defensively in center field while batting .282 with 39 extra-base hits and a .780 OPS in 116 games.

ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income

Against the backdrop of your online business are your habits, and they are busy doing all the things they do to move you forward or sabotage your good efforts. Let?s waste no time moving forward so we can help you to help your self and your internet marketing activities.

Always keep yourself focused and organized. Use tools like Workflowy and SimpleNote to track your daily tasks and get things done.

Some online marketers use networking more than others, out of necessity, so that describes you then take a look at if you do it and how well you do it. There are many Internet marketers that go through slow progress because they don?t want to go out there and network with the right people. However, without really growing your contacts and networking on a regular basis, you?ll find it very difficult to do everything on your own. But we realize that for many people it is easy to not think about these things because you are so busy just doing important tasks each day. You can join business social networks such as LinkedIn, and then you begin meeting people, etc. It really is all up to you as well as how you present your self, etc. Take a good look at what you are doing, and never be hesitant about reaching out to someone and networking with them or just meeting with them. Do not be afraid to share what you have, and in fact giving before you receive on the net is powerful. Surely, you are expected and should do what your particular business dictates. But at the same time you need to show some gratitude and give back to the others what you have learned. When you sincerely give without expectations of receiving anything, then that is good enough. Don?t be someone who is too closed and self-centered, find new channels to give away what you?ve learned. If you are a writer, then perhaps you could help some site with your writing skills or their content.

A smart Internet marketer is always building something. Yes, it is interesting because this is a habit that seems to develop with all of us. So this is nothing new and is actually a logical outgrowth or result of what our businesses on the net are all about. So this is where you want to be, hopefully, and at least until you get to the point where you can just outsource it all if you want. This is all called taking action, and it is the type of thing you have to cultivate if you want to go far. There is nothing hard about it, but you do need to have the desire to do it and willingness to give up TV or something else. You can succeed at internet marketing by learning as much as you can and constantly working to improve your mindset. Primal Brain in the Modern Classroom

Evolution biased the human mind to attend to some types of information over others?often the exact opposite of what teachers wish children would learn

    In Brief

    1. Understanding how the brain evolved can help us comprehend why children may struggle to learn in school.
    2. Natural selection biased human minds over thousands of generations to attend automatically to some features of the social and ecological environment before others.
    3. Only with effort can we override our automatic learning systems to tackle new challenges, such as those we face in school.

As children settle into their classrooms for the beginning of a new school year, parents steel themselves for the pending battle. Mothers and fathers know well that their youngsters would rather pay attention to one another than to the blackboard. But parents may not realize that the reasons children struggle with education lie deep in our evolutionary past.

Charles Darwin?s theory of natural selection provides a framework for organizing and understanding all living things. How we learn?and what we are interested in learning about?is also shaped by natural selection. Most demands of life are relatively mundane and change little across the millennia. Our minds have evolved to handle these predictable bits of information with ease. Dramatic variation, such as an outbreak of disease or war, brings unexpected challenges and can have a disproportionate influence on our survival. Those who can deftly solve problems to survive such fluctuating circumstances gain an edge.

In essence, we have two modes for dealing with information?autopilot and conscious engagement. Whereas automated processing handles the universal features of the social and ecological worlds, our conscious problem-solving abilities let us register nuances in our environments.

By understanding both mechanisms for learning, we achieve deep insight into how children think. We can begin to see why children pick up some skills effortlessly and others with substantial struggle. An evolutionary approach to teaching could help educators bridge the divide between children?s innate cognitive biases and the goals of contemporary schooling, potentially revealing more effective ways to educate future generations.

Anchors in a Sea of Sensations
Some of our learning biases are revealed early in life. From birth, babies attend longer to stimuli with the structure of a human face?two eyes above a nose?than to other equally complex stimuli. These critical features draw infants? attention, facilitating the development of parent-child attachment. Such elements of human survival that stay basically the same across thousands of lifetimes become hardwired as anchors of human cognition. They direct our attention to predictable aspects of life and allow us to automatically process information related to them. The bias for faces helps newborns anchor themselves in an otherwise overwhelmingly stimulating environment.

Infants must also differentiate their parents from other people, however, so these cognitive anchors are imbued with a certain amount of flexibility. But what makes humans unique is another level of plasticity that allows us to consciously solve problems. When conditions change rapidly, threatening our survival or reproductive prospects, our automatic systems can hold us back. Instead we need creative ways to address new situations. The combination of hardwired predilections and plastic problem solving determines how we handle new information?and, by extension, how we learn.

Theorists suggest that our ability to consciously solve problems very likely emerged from fluctuating climates, complex social dynamics or ecological demands such as hunting. Richard D. Alexander, an evolutionary biologist now retired from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, has proposed one possible model for the evolution of the human mind. When our ancestors began building shelters, creating tools for hunting and using fire for cooking, they became better at extracting resources from their environments and fending off starvation and predation. With these threats reduced, early populations likely expanded, spurring competition over the best land, food and other desirable commodities.

The heart of this battle for existence then becomes a struggle among members of our own species for control of those key resources. Social competition is not unique to humans, but it becomes an especially potent selection pressure for species that dominate their ecosystems, as we do. Both our ecological supremacy and the accompanying social competition are undergirded by ?folk knowledge??the indigenous patterns of thought that help us process the psychology, biology and physics of life.

Romney leads Obama, Perry ties him in head-to-head match up (Daily Caller)

President Barack Obama would tie with Rick Perry, lose to Mitt Romney and face a tough race against Ron Paul or Michele Bachmann in a head-to-head race, according to a nationwide Gallup poll released Monday.

Romney is the strongest candidate against the sitting president, leading Obama 48 to 46 percent among registered voters. Perry, who has been in the race for just over a week, ties with Obama both receiving 47 percent of the vote. Obama narrowly beats out Ron Paul, 47 to 45 percent, and holds only a slightly larger lead against Michele Bachmann ? 48 to 44 percent.

The poll, conducted from Aug. 16 through Aug. 17, surveyed voters at a time when they were giving Obama the lowest approval ratings as measured by Gallup since the start of his presidency. His approval rating has stayed close to 40 percent for the past couple weeks, twice dropping to 39 percent, the lowest measured approval of his presidency.

The Republican frontrunners are actually outpolling the generic Republican, according to Gallup?s numbers. In the beginning of August, 39 percent said they would vote for the unspecified GOP candidate, while 45 percent said they would vote for president Obama.

Gallup found that more Republicans would support Perry and Romney against Obama than would support Bachmann or Paul. 92 percent of Republicans would vote for Perry over Obama, and 91 percent would vote for Romney. But just 82 percent would vote for Paul over Obama, and 86 percent for Bachmann over the president.

Independents also favor Romney and Perry, as well as Ron Paul ? all three beat out Obama among independents. However, independents are less inclined to vote for Bachmann, and she loses to Obama among that demographic, 48 to 42 percent. (RELATED: GOP presidential candidates weigh in on Libya)

Of course, the Republican field is liable to change at any moment, with speculation buzzing about Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, and George Pataki potentially joining the race for the Republican nomination.

Obama faces mixed prospects with those candidates. A CNN/Opinion Research Center poll released August 11 found that Giuliani would beat Obama 51 to 45 percent among registered voters. Palin, on the other hand, continues to poll poorly against the president, getting 41 to his 55 percent in the CNN/ORC poll, and just 33 percent to Obama?s 50 percent in a Rasmussen poll released Monday.

Gallup?s results are based on telephone interviews with 1,026 adults nationwide from August 17 to August 18, including a sample of 879 registered voters. The margin of error for both samples is plus or minus four percentage points.
