Workplace safety and preventing workplace accidents and injuries should be at the top of every business's priority list. But, sadly this is not always the case and some businesses think of profits over safety and possible work injuries.
However, a recent study found that not only do random inspections by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration lower the risk of a worker getting hurt while on the job, in cases where there are injuries, the workers' compensation costs associated with medical expenses and lost wages is actually lower.
According to the study, which compared 409 businesses that went through random OSHA inspection with 409 businesses that did not go through the inspection, there were 9.4 percent less worker injuries at those companies who went through the inspection. The data of the inspections, or lack thereof, was between 1996 and 2006.
Additionally, in cases where there were workplace injuries, the workers' compensation costs were 26 percent less when the company did go through an inspection.
Lastly, it was found that there were no negative economic consequences for companies that did go through an inspection. According to the study, those businesses that went through the inspection did not report higher job losses or a reduction in sales. The companies also did not go out of business any faster or slower than those companies that did not have an inspection.
When looking at this study, while it does not guarantee that all companies in New Jersey will start to take workplace safety more seriously, it does at least point to the fact that it will not economically hurt those that do.

Using an iPad to control your music system? Been there, done that. Using an iPad to control a submersible that also records underwater video in 1080p? Oh, the possibilities. Aquabotix is giving Jacques Cousteau wannabes the ability to shoot the watery depths all the way down to 150 feet as its underwater doohickey -- the HydroView -- officially goes on sale. Measuring 14.6 x 19 x 7 inches and weighing nine pounds, the submersible comes with LED lights, a three-hour battery and a top-side box that connects with a cable tether. The box also allows users to communicate with the HydroView via an iPad, Mac or PC. Besides getting video proof of, say, which swimmers ate too many bean burritos for lunch, the submersible can also take pictures and gather data about water conditions. Top speed for the submersible is five knots -- one knot when going in reverse. Just make sure you don't channel your inner SpongeBob while remotely driving the thing. Although it's not in the same league as Rinspeed's submersible Elise, the HydroView still doesn't come cheap at $3,995 a pop. Check out the official PR and, uh, low-def video of the diminutive diver in action after the break.
Most of the really interesting stuff from the D10 relating to Apple has come from the Tim Cook interview, but another interesting tidbit came from an interview with Spotify's Sean Parker and Daniel Ek. When asked if Apple had tried to stop Spotify from entering the U.S. market, Parker hesitantly answered, "There was some indication that that might have been happening."

Do American companies have a problem with paying their employees? A growing number of workers seem to think so.
Collective action lawsuits alleging wage and hour violations have risen 400 percent in the last 11 years, according to a recent post at CNNMoney. In 2011, there were more than 7,000 such lawsuits filed in federal court -- a huge increase since the turn of the century.
These lawuits involve workers who claim they didn't get paid the full amount for all the hours they worked -- either because they were improperly listed as ineligible for overtime, or because they simply never got the money for the work they put in.
Claims of this kind have become incredibly pervasive in recent years. Lawyers cited in a 2007 Bloomberg story on wage and hour lawsuits estimated that companies may be paying out more than a billion dollars a year to resolve these cases.
It's hard to think of a major company that hasn't had at least one wage and hour suit brought against it lately. In early May, to name one recent example, Taco Bell was hit with a lawsuit alleging that employees were often forced to work unpaid hours -- just the latest in a series of similar accusations the chain has faced.
Other companies whose workers have accused them of denying proper pay include Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Bank of America, Oracle, IBM, Fremantle Media and the Hooters restaurant chain.
In general, the weak economy and sluggish labor market have reduced the amount of leverage employees have in their relationship with their managers -- meaning it's been especially easy in recent years for bosses to demand ever more of workers while paying them the same amount as before.
A tiny tick is at the center of a big debate among some physicians.
?
Lyme disease ? so named because it was first reported here in 1975 in Old Lyme, Conn. ? is a well-documented tick-borne disease, with more than 30,000 reported cases each year.
?
The telltale symptom of Lyme disease is a red, circular ?bulls-eye? rash that appears five to 14 days after infection. Other symptoms include fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
?
?
While most patients diagnosed with Lyme disease respond quickly to a short course of antibiotics, a few patients have persistent, lingering symptoms. Some physicians maintain those patients suffer from chronic Lyme disease and require extended treatment with antibiotics.
?
But does chronic Lyme disease even exist?
?
The mainstream school of thought is ?no.?
?
Chronic Lyme disease ?is a label used very liberally,? says Dr. Paul Auwaerter, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who also serves as the clinical director for the Division of Infectious Diseases.?
?
There is no sound scientific evidence that the bacteria that causes Lyme disease ? Borrelia burgdorferi ? persists after a two- to four-week treatment with antibiotics, says Auwaerter, a board member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
?
?
Studies funded bytheNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have failed to demonstrate that prolonged antibiotic therapy is beneficial to those who report symptoms such as chronic fatigue, persistent pain and impaired cognitive function.
?
There are rare cases of post-Lyme disease syndrome, but treatment, Auwaerter and others say, should target the specific symptoms.
?
Dr. Steven Soloway, a board-certified rheumatologist in Vineland, N.J., says some patients develop arthritic symptoms after being treated for Lyme disease, but that the treatment is similar to that for someone with rheumatoid arthritis.
?
?We don?t keep on giving antibiotics,? says Soloway.
?
Soloway says such use of antibiotics carries risks that include creation of drug-resistant bacteria.
?
?
But Dr. Daniel J. Cameron, writing in the journal Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Diseases, argues that ?the risk to society of emerging antibiotic-resistant organisms should be weighed against the societal risks associated with failing to treat an emerging population saddled with chronic Lyme disease.?
?
There is enough evidence of chronic Lyme disease ?that can we at least accept that it is a problem,? says Cameron, who has a practice in Mount Kisco, N.Y., 45 miles north of New York City.
?
?Denying the existence and severity of [chronic Lyme disease] will continue to hinder the efforts to find a solution,? Cameron writes.
?
At the very least, Cameron says in a telephone interview, there is a need for more research. Earlier studies on the effectiveness of long-term use antibiotics ?aren?t that good? ? a view shared by Dr. Samuel Shor, an internal medicine physician in Reston, Va., and an associate clinical professor at George Washington University Health Care Sciences. (Watch a video of Shor making the case for chronic Lyme disease.)
?
Shor notes that just 222 patients were?involved in the studies cited by?the?National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
?
?It?s a small group from which they are generating these dogmatic conclusions,? says Shor.
?
And he points out that the Institute of Medicine in 2011 issued a report on Lyme disease stating, ?significant gaps in knowledge exist that require new studies and research.?
?
Many patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, Shor says, may instead have active chronic Lyme disease. Shor says he has patients with debilitating symptoms for years respond to a course of antibiotics.
?
Such treatments ?are not independent of other supportive management,? he adds. A patient complaining of joint pain or sleep problems would be treated for those issues while the antibiotics are taking hold.

The aftermath after upgrading my Samsung GALAXY Note to Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is that I could not find the subfolders in my Exchange email account. It was frustrating to go through the options and no solution in site.
I thought I did a pretty good job to check through all settings. But I just could not find how I can call out the subfolders. BTW, subfolders means any folders under the Inbox.
If you have this problem after upgrading and your ICS version is Version 4.0.3, here is what you need to do.
Copy the settings of your email server.
Delete the email account.
Setup the email account again with the settings that you copied previously.
That is it. The subfolders will appear. Hope it helps. This solution is after I read this.

Mobile technology, remote coaching, financial incentives may help improve diet, activity levelPublic release date: 28-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

CHICAGO The diet and activity levels of patients may be improved through use of mobile technology, remote coaching and financial incentives, according to a report of a randomized controlled trial published in the May 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.
Not following a physician's lifestyle change advice is a major barrier to patients achieving effective preventive care. Many physicians are skeptical that patients will change their unhealthy behaviors, and physicians also report a lack of time and training to effectively counsel their patients, researchers write in the study background.
"This study's interventions leveraged handheld technology to create efficient interventions that make self-monitoring more convenient, extend decision support into life contexts where lifestyle choices are made, and convey time-stamped behavioral data to paraprofessionals who provide coaching remotely," the researchers note.
Bonnie Spring, Ph.D., of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients (48 men) with elevated intake of saturated fat and low intake of fruits and vegetables, and high sedentary leisure time and low physical activity into 1 of 4 treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure. Patients used personal digital assistant devices to record and self-regulate their behaviors.
During three weeks of treatment, patients uploaded their data daily and communicated as needed with their coaches by telephone or by email. The participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the treatment phase. In addition, there was a 20-week follow-up during which patients could earn from $30 to $80 for continuing to record and transmit their data.
"The increase fruits/vegetables and decrease sedentary leisure treatment maximized healthy lifestyle change compared with the other interventions," the authors comment. They note that lifestyle gains diminished once treatment ended, as expected, but improvements persisted throughout the follow-up period.
From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the follow-up, respectively, mean (average) servings per day of fruits/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9, mean minutes per day of sedentary leisure from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7, and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent, according to the study results.
"This study demonstrates the feasibility of changing multiple unhealthy diet and activity behaviors simultaneously, efficiently and with minimal face-to-face contact by using mobile technology, remote coaching, and incentives," the authors comment.

Invited Commentary: Using Technology for Interventions on Health Risk Factors
In an invited commentary, William T. Riley, Ph.D., of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., writes: "Via technology, we will soon be able to deliver fully automated and configurable multiple risk factor interventions that monitor progress continuously and can be delivered throughout the day every day."
"It remains an empirical question, however, whether these technological advances improve outcomes, reduce costs or both," Riley continues.
"Spring et al have contributed to the empirical evidence of the value of these technologies, but many more research contributions such as this are needed to establish that technologically delivered multiple risk factor interventions improve outcomes," Riley concludes.

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? The first modern humans in Europe were playing musical instruments and showing artistic creativity as early as 40,000 years ago, according to new research from Oxford and T?bingen universities.
The researchers have obtained important new radiocarbon dates for bones found in the same archaeological layers as a variety of musical instruments. The instruments take the form of flutes made from the bird bones and mammoth ivory. They were excavated at a key site in Germany, which is widely believed to have been occupied by some of first modern humans to arrive in Europe.
In a paper published in the Journal of Human Evolution, the researchers describe the new dating results for animal bones, excavated in the same archaeological layers as the instruments and early art, at Gei?enkl?sterle Cave in the Swabian Jura of southern Germany. The animal bones bear cuts and marks from human hunting and eating.
The new dates were obtained by Professor Tom Higham and his team at Oxford University, using an improved ultrafiltration method designed to remove contamination from the collagen preserved in the bones. The researchers show that the Aurignacian, a culture linked with early modern humans and dating to the Upper Paleolithic period, began at the site between 42,000 and 43,000 years ago.
The new dating evidence, obtained from bones in the site, provided results that are 2,000 to 3,000 years older than previously thought. So far these dates are the earliest for the Aurignacian and predate equivalent sites from Italy, France, England and other regions.
Lead author Professor Higham from Oxford University said: 'High-resolution dating of this kind is essential for establishing a reliable chronology for testing ideas to help explain the expansion of modern humans into Europe, and the processes that led to the wide range of cultural innovations, including the advent of figurative art and music.'
Professor Nick Conard of T?bingen University, who was excavator at the site, said: 'These results are consistent with a hypothesis we made several years ago that the Danube River was a key corridor for the movement of humans and technological innovations into central Europe between 40,000 and 45,000 years ago. Gei?enkl?sterle is one of several caves in the region that has produced important examples of personal ornaments, figurative art, mythical imagery and musical instruments. The new dates prove the great antiquity of the Aurignacian in Swabia.'
The study results indicate that modern humans entered the Upper Danube region before an extremely cold climatic phase at around 39,000 to 40,000 years ago. Previously, researchers had argued that modern humans initially migrated up the Danube immediately after this event.
'Modern humans during the Aurignacian period were in central Europe at least 2,000 to 3,000 years before this climatic deterioration, when huge icebergs calved from ice sheets in the northern Atlantic and temperatures plummeted,' said Professor Higham. 'The question is what effect this downturn might have had on the people in Europe at the time.'
The results are also important for considering the relationship between early moderns and Neanderthals in Europe. Despite a major effort to identify archaeological signatures of interaction between Neanderthals and modern humans in this region, researchers have yet to identify indications of any cultural contact or interbreeding in this part of Europe.
The results suggest that the Danube Valley is a plausible homeland for the Aurignacian, with the Swabian caves producing the earliest record of technological and artistic innovations that are characteristic of this period. Whether the many innovations found in Swabia were stimulated by climatic conditions, competition between modern humans and Neanderthals, or by social and cultural influences that formed quite independently remain a central focus of their research.

There are so many different reasons that people will choose to go after affiliate marketing. One of the most common reasons is it brings less administrative headaches and hassles with it. You aren?t going to have to deal with taking orders or setting up the infrastructure for taking orders. Refunds and customer support is not in the domain of affiliate marketers, either. So this alone provides some major incentives for people who might be looking seriously at affiliate marketing. Obviously there are going to be more, but all of the administration duties are boring and time consuming. This point here about making your own products could very well be viewed as a negative by some people. What is important is how you take your responsibility and whether or not you are comfortable having this sort of responsibility in your life. All of the creation and promotion of your product is going to be up to you. On the other hand, you?ll have more control, which you should already know. Some people, though, don?t like the idea of any of this and would just as soon keep clear of that kind of responsibility. That is fine and it is a call you have to make, so remember what it all means when you decide to start doing product creation. Makita BSS501

Brothers Adam, 10, left, and Brendan Koeppl,11, have autism and use an iPad to help with their motor skills, eye/hand coordination, learning facial/verbal expressions and learning to verbalize wants and needs. (Photos by Teesha McClam, Dayton Daily News/Special to The Denver Post)
When the iPad debuted two years ago, there was lots of talk about whether people beyond the iPhone and Mac faithful would use such a thing.
But it became very clear to a particular group of people ? advocates for those with autism spectrum disorders ? that the device could be a new tool for communication and education in that community, something perhaps even Apple didn't foresee. Some autism-related apps aid conversation between parents and children, while others help with learning words or social skills.
In fact, there are now so many autism-related apps for the iPad and other iOS devices that there's "Autism Apps," an app that provides a comprehensive list.
Kel Smith, a blogger, consultant and founder of the Philadelphia-based technology accessibility company Anikto LLC, has been studying technology shifts like this one for a book he's working on, "Digital Outcasts: Moving Technology Forward Without Leaving People Behind."
It revolves around "accessibility," the idea that websites, apps, hardware and other technology should be designed in ways that do not shut them out to those with disabilities including blindness, hearing loss and other physical limitations.
But the concept of the book is changing as Smith works on it.
"I went in with the premise that there's entire populations of people who are being left behind; they're not being considered. Then I realized, they're the ones driving the innovation and moving it forward. They're forming their own solutions at this very grassroots level."
Smith's company Anikto (the word is Greek for "Open") has for years been advocating more accessible web design, hardware and software. In recent years, he says, tech companies are realizing that they're leaving money on the table by not making their sites or products accessible.
"Ten years ago, I was being laughed out of boardrooms for bringing up that we should make things accessible," Smith says. "Now, there's a
Adam and Brendan play HalfBrick-Fruit Ninji on their iPad to help with their motor skills and eye/hand coordination.
greater recognition that there's a market for this type of stuff and it's not just what we do on a secular level."
The idea is that designers should think about accessibility because it's in their own best interests ? in addition to being altruistic.
For companies selling products online, for instance, "You have to understand that people who have a disability that prevents them from leaving the home will be shopping from home. You don't want to have barriers (to) that purchasing decision," he says.
What's more, the cost for individuals and nonprofits to create their own web design tools and apps is falling, making it easier than ever for technology for the disabled to be distributed and for communities online to get the word out about them.
Another big shift is that for years, accessibility was largely focused on how the web is viewed on computers, how the online world interacts with computers, and mice and text-to-speech devices.
But now, much of people's web browsing is moving to mobile devices like smart phones, which have much smaller screens. We're also being introduced to personal tech like Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect, which relies on gestures and movement.
These new interfaces can be a double-edged sword. They provide "a whole new array of possibilities," Smith says, "and a whole new array of problems... We're almost back to square one in terms of web accessibility."
Improvements in tech accessibility are likely to benefit an increasing number of people as aging baby boomers will soon dictate the demand for devices suitable for people with limited motor skills, hand-eye coordination, poor vision and hearing.

Some web design companies also offer search engine optimization (SEO) services that help in enhancing the rankings of the website on the various search engines.
Creativity: It?s imperative that a competent web design company should offer professional work with excellent graphics as well as design. You applied for a job and were just called in for an interview.
The only problem?
You?re having second thoughts about the position.
Maybe the pay is low or the job function isn?t quite what you?re looking for. Or maybe the company culture is a bit dry for your taste. Whatever the cause of your cold feet, you should think twice before turning down any job interview.
Here?s why?
1. Sharpen Your Interview Skills
Google ?interview tips.? Guess how many results turn up?
9,300,000.
Why so many? Because interviews aren?t easy. They?re awkward, pressure-filled situations that demand your A-game. No number of advice articles or practice interviews will prepare you as much as the real thing, so suit up and take advantage of the opportunity.
2. Discover What Others in Your Industry Are Up To
Job interviews are an excellent learning opportunity. Once you?re done practicing your responses to common?interview?questions, take the time to quiz?the?employer. Inquire about position requirements, departmental strategies, and company goals. Take what you learn and use it to your advantage into future interviews.
3. Build Your Network
The fact you applied to this job and were offered an interview suggests you?ll be doing business with similar people (perhaps even these people) in the future. Why not use the interview as a networking opportunity? As long as you conduct yourself with professionalism, there?s no reason why you shouldn?t leave with a few new LinkedIn connections. Maybe they?ll even know of an opportunity that?s a better fit for you down the road.
4. Learn What?s Out There
Every organization is unique. By visiting a company?s campus and talking to its employees, you?ll get an insider?s look at what it?s like to work there. Remember what you like and what you don?t, then use these insights as you move forward with picking?a?new?job.
5. Gain Bargaining Power
It?s not uncommon for hiring managers to ask if you?re interviewing elsewhere. If you?re not, then you won?t be seen as a hot commodity. If you can say yes, however, it might give the hiring manager a sense of urgency to scoop you up before someone else does. What?s more, having multiple job offers is an excellent bargaining chip when it comes time for salary negotiations.
6. You Never Know What Will Happen
A million different things can happen to change your perspective of the company or the job. Maybe the salary is low, but the opportunity for advancement (including raises) is through the roof. Or maybe what you?ve read and heard up to this point doesn?t do the company culture justice. There might even be another position open at the company that you?re better suited for.
The point?
You?ll never know if you don?t go to the interview.
As with any business engagement, it is of utmost importance that you act like the professional you are. Don?t flake, don?t convey your indifference, and don?t treat the interview lightly ? word gets around.
And besides, the hiring manager is taking time out of his day to meet with you because he believes in your qualifications and cultural fit; why treat him with anything less than the respect he deserves?
Are there any reasons you can think of to say no to a job interview?
