During mid afternoon on Saturday 25th June, 2011, NSRI East London were placed on alert following a ?Pan Pan? (a request for assistance) from a female solo sailor aboard her yacht reporting to be experiencing some mechanical problems in very rough sea conditions some 12 nautical miles off-shore in the vicinity of the Kei River Mouth on the Eastern Cape Coastline.
Sea swells at the time were rough 7 to 8 meter swells and very strong winds.
She?had requested only assistance and she was not declaring a full-blown emergency distress.
NSRI East London were placed on high alert and an NSRI Air Sea Rescue team were placed on alert with the AV8 helicopter company (East London) and with the SA Air Force 15 Squadron, Charlie Flight, (Port Elizabeth), while Maritime Radio Services continued to monitor communications and the position of the yacht via VHF Radio communications and satellite telephone.
At approximately 05h00 this morning, Sunday 26th June, 2011, no further communications could be reached with the yacht and at 07h00, with sea and weather conditions having subsided considerably, a fixed wing aircraft and NSRI East London?s deep-sea rescue craft Spirit of Lotto?was dispatched to search for the yacht.
The search is still underway.?

Smurf fans around the world are celebrating the birthday of the famous cartoon strip's creator and awaiting a new blockbuster movie adaptation. But could the blue creatures offer a model for society?
There is a place where the neighbours are always willing to lend a hand, where everyone has a certain skill and is willing to employ it, without personal reward, for the benefit of everyone.

The Smurfs, created in 1958 by the Belgian artist Pierre Culliford also known as Peyo, have proved hugely popular.
Their original name is Les Schtroumpfs, a word born during a meal Peyo was having with his friend in which, having temporarily forgotten the word "salt", Peyo asked him to pass the schtroumpf.
The two continued to talk, in French, using that word instead of recognised terms, and so the concept was born.

Later Peyo, already a successful artist whose father was English and mother Belgian, introduced little blue imp-like creatures into his existing stories about a medieval page and his sidekick, called Johan and Peewit.
The Smurfs - as these creatures are called in English, having been taken from the Dutch name De Smurfen - were an instant hit and following pleas from children, Peyo began a dedicated comic strip.
In 1981, Hanna-Barbera began to produce a cartoon series that resulted in 256 episodes, dubbed into some 30 languages and still being shown on more than 120 television channels around the world today.
Peyo died of a heart attack on Christmas Eve in 1992, but his family's work - his son Thierry runs his studio - continued.
Saturday is Global Smurfs Day, an event which celebrates the birthday of Peyo. It's also intended to whip up interest in the forthcoming Smurfs movie, due to be released in August starring Hank Azaria as Gargamel and Katy Perry as the voice of Smurfette - the first of a trilogy of films.
IMPS is run by Veronique Culliford and William Auriol Each Smurf is known by their particular skill - Handy for the one who's good at DIY, Brainy for the clever one, Barber for the one who cuts hair etc. They're all organised by Papa Smurf, the eldest and wisest one, and their village is run as a collective without any use of currency.
Devoid of any particular cultural cues, the Smurfs have proved popular around the world.
"They are unique creations. They don't do politics or religion, they are multi-cultural, everybody around the world can recognise themselves in a Smurf," says Peyo's daughter, Veronique Culliford, who started International Merchandising, Promotion and Services in 1984 to look after the Smurf merchandising.
"Everyone can apply their very nice values of friendship, kindness and helping others to their own lives, regardless of where they come from."
But there is evidence of their genesis in 1950s Belgium. The lack of female characters - there are only three, and only one of them major - is down to the influence of the Catholic Church in education, says Willem de Graeve, director of the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels.

"That was a totally different era, when there was a very strong separation of genders in Belgium. This was a consequence of the Catholic education. It was not the done thing to show boys and girls having an adventure together."
And Peyo did occasionally use the Smurfs to convey political messages, such as in the King Smurf story, where one character seizes authoritarian control of the village in a metaphor that's anti-dictatorship.

There has even been debate about whether the artist intended the Smurfs to be a metaphor for socialism, but there is room for anyone with a political ideology that emphasises co-operation and community to interpret them through their own prism.
The Smurfs lived without money, using their individual skills for the common good, without individual reward, to ensure their community thrives.
You can even see echoes of the British government's Big Society idea, part of which encourages individuals to form community groups and engage in social action, particularly through volunteering, says Prof Ellis Cashmore, a sociologist from Staffordshire University.
"There are similarities between David Cameron's idea of the Big Society and what we see embodied in Smurf society.
"Cameron [is asking people to get] organised with their local community, have organic collectivity and work for each other, like we used to before industrialisation came along and fragmented society."
Smurfs have done overt politics more recently - in 2005, a Unicef advertisement featuring Smurfs was aired in Belgium, in which their village is bombed by aircraft, to raise funds for African children.
The Smurf empire is moving onto new platforms, taking advantage of the social gaming trend. A Smurf smartphone game targeted at women aged between 18 and 34 has had 12 million downloads so far.

The "glue" is shaped like a dumbbell: at one end is an anchor that sticks to the membrane, and at the other is a molecule that binds to the cancer-promoting proteins. The anchor is a cholesterol molecule that is well known to chemists for sticking to cell membranes. The protein recognition molecule is fairly picky about what it will bind to, reducing the risk of drug-related side effects.
Gunning says that by sticking the target proteins to the cell membrane, the glue-like substance interferes with how they cause cancer cells to multiply out of control. However, on a normal cell, the new therapy should have little effect.
"We are really excited about the potential for this type of drug," says Gunning, who developed the concept along with Professor Claudiu Gradinaru at U of T Mississauga and Professor James Turkson at the University of Central Florida. "This is ready to move to preclinical studies, and this treatment could slow or stop the explosive growth of cancerous tumours. And for patients, this might reduce the need for really powerful chemotherapy, which can be very hard to tolerate."

Potato chips are piling on the pounds, study finds (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Blame the potato chip. It's the biggest demon behind that pound-a-year weight creep that plagues many of us, a major diet study found. Bigger than soda, candy and ice cream.
And the reason is partly that old advertising cliche: You can't eat just one.
"They're very tasty and they have a very good texture. People generally don't take one or two chips. They have a whole bag," said obesity expert Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer of the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York.
What we eat and how much of it we consume has far more impact than exercise and most other habits do on long-term weight gain, according to the study by Harvard University scientists. It's the most comprehensive look yet at the effect of individual foods and lifestyle choices like sleep time and quitting smoking.
The results are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
Weight problems are epidemic. Two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past three decades. Pounds often are packed on gradually over decades, and many people struggle to limit weight gain without realizing what's causing it.
The new study finds food choices are key. The message: Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts. Cut back on potatoes, red meat, sweets and soda.
"There is no magic bullet for weight control," said one study leader, Dr. Frank Hu. "Diet and exercise are important for preventing weight gain, but diet clearly plays a bigger role."
Doctors analyzed changes in diet and lifestyle habits of 120,877 people from three long-running medical studies. All were health professionals and not obese at the start. Their weight was measured every four years for up to two decades, and they detailed their diet on questionnaires.
On average, participants gained nearly 17 pounds over the 20-year period.
For each four-year period, food choices contributed nearly 4 pounds. Exercise, for those who did it, cut less than 2 pounds.
Potato chips were the biggest dietary offender. Each daily serving containing 1 ounce (about 15 chips and 160 calories) led to a 1.69-pound uptick over four years. That's compared to sweets and desserts, which added 0.41 pound.
For starchy potatoes other than chips, the gain was 1.28 pounds. Within the spud group, french fries were worse for the waist than boiled, baked or mashed potatoes. That's because a serving of large fries contains between 500 to 600 calories compared with a serving of a large baked potato at 280 calories.
Soda added a pound over four years. Eating more fruits and vegetables and other unprocessed foods led to less weight gain, probably because they are fiber-rich and make people feel fuller.
For each four-year period, these factors had these effects on weight:
? An alcoholic drink a day, 0.41-pound increase.
? Watching an hour of TV a day, 0.31-pound increase.
? Recently quitting smoking, 5-pound increase.
People who slept more or less than six to eight hours a night gained more weight.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and a foundation. Several researchers reported receiving fees from drug and nutrition companies.
"Humans naturally like fat and sweet," said Dr. David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, who had no role in the study. "That's why we always tell people to eat their fruits and vegetables."
Pi-Sunyer, who also wasn't involved in the research, said the study gives useful advice.
"It's hard to lose weight once you gain it," he said. "Anything that will give people a clue about what might prevent weight gain if they follow through with it is helpful."
The federal government earlier this year issued new dietary guidelines advising people to eat smarter. This month, it ditched the food pyramid ? the longtime symbol of healthy eating ? in favor of a dinner plate divided into four sections containing fruits, vegetables, protein and grains.

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?
Felicia @ Geeky Blogger?s Book Blog?gave this 4 wine glasses?and when I was deciding between two books she recently read, she suggested I read this one. She knows me well 
I really enjoyed this one. This could have been a 5 star book if the romance wasn?t so dark (maybe that?s not the right term because I do like dark romance ? I?ll have to explain more in depth later). I don?t remember the last time I laughed out loud as much or highlighted as often! Allie?s sense of humor was perfection!
The book ends leaving you wanting more (not in a cliffhanger kind of way)? until I saw who the next book is about and I think it will be too dark for me at the moment.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style
I liked the mythology quite a bit. I thought it was well-developed with just enough based on religious myth?mixed with?the author?s own twists. There was also a good amount of literary and pop references that I enjoyed. The fact that the main female dies in the beginning of the book was a unique and fast-paced start to a very well paced book. There was plenty of action, character-building, and romance to balance everything out nicely.

Felicia had mentioned having issues with the first sex scene and took points off Raziel?s character score for the encounter going the way it did. While I didn?t like what was done, it wasn?t because of Raziel. I felt sorry for both of them. I could have forgiven it if it was a ?can?t wait to have her anymore? thing (since her objections were emotional hold backs and not that she didn?t want him), but he was forced into it against his wishes as well and it sucked the romance out what could have been a perfect finally sexual moment.
Characters
I loved Allie. She was hilarious, realistic, and feisty. She took things exactly how she should have considering her personality. I wish we had learned a little more about her mother and her past, but we knew enough to see that it wasn?t good and that she was less emotional and more pragmatic due to her upbringing. I also?loved her profession and how it tied into the story.
I?m glad we got to see parts of the story from Raziel?s POV. Otherwise we might have mistaken him for the cold-hearted, uncaring, never-going-to-love-again hardass he was trying to portray. It was pretty clear that he was in some deep denial. Did I agree with how he handled the situation? Not always. But it did fit with who he was and how he was desperately trying to live his life.
The side characters were extremely well-developed. Sara in particular was a central aspect of the story and paired with Allie?s current and future life perfectly.

Greek government carries confidence vote for crisis reforms (AFP)
ATHENS (AFP) ? Greece's embattled government early Wednesday carried a confidence vote through parliament to pursue critical reforms needed to unlock vital new assistance from its international creditors.
The Socialist party of George Papandreou successfully mobilised its five-seat majority in the chamber to prevail by 155 votes in favour to 143 against, according to a count released by the head of parliament.
In a closing speech after three days of debate, Papandreou called for support "to avoid bankruptcy and keep Greece in the euro core."
"Today's vote is a contract with the Greek people," the prime minister told parliament, speaking of a "national struggle for salvation and change."
"It is a difficult task, but it can give birth to a new Greece," he said.
Athens now effectively has two weeks to convince its European peers that it will carry out long-delayed structural reforms and privatisations in order to secure badly needed bailout money before its funds run out in July.
Despite an unprecedented rescue by the EU and the IMF last year, Greece has been unable to restore its battered image on financial markets -- a position hardly helped by a debt that has exploded to more than 350 billion euros -- and will urgently need additional cash soon.
Speaking earlier in the debate, the Greek finance minister pledged to exceed austerity reform goals set by the EU and the IMF.
Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, newly appointed to the post on Friday, said Athens would aim at "broader and faster" state cuts than those agreed with its creditors as he appealed for a "patriotic" vote to save the nation.
"We have the will and the obligation... (to formulate) a parallel programme that allows us to have better results," he said in reference to a midterm plan of more than 28 billion euros ($40 billion) in savings demanded by the EU and IMF.
Prime Minister Papandreou reshuffled the government on Friday as protests mounted towards his government's economic policies, which critics say made a crushing recession even worse.
Around 4,000 people gathered outside parliament on Tuesday, part of a movement that has drawn tens of thousands of angry Greeks to the square opposite the legislature since May 25.
Analysts say victory in the confidence vote would almost certainly mean that Papandreou, who has staked his career on Greece's economic recovery, would then get backing for other votes on the austerity cuts, and a special law applying them, by the end of the month.
The government suffered an unexpected casualty on Tuesday when a lawmaker tasked with sponsoring the reform package in next week's debate bowed out for "personal reasons."
He later backed the government in the confidence vote.
Two opinion polls released earlier on Tuesday showed the ruling Pasok party trailing the opposition New Democracy conservatives.
One of the polls, broadcast by prominent private television channel Mega, showed that 58.8 percent of respondents took a dim view of the reshuffle and 63.2 percent doubt that it will improve the government's efficiency.
The eurozone issued an ultimatum to Greece on Monday, when it held back the latest slice of a 110-billion-euro ($160-billion) rescue loan package agreed last year.
It told Greek lawmakers, in effect, to support the government and approve swingeing new budget cuts, saying further delay and uncertainty could increase pressure throughout the eurozone.
But the European Union has tempered the warning with promises of additional funds if Athens gets its fiscal house in order.
European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso on Tuesday suggested the EU agree "emergency" measures to pump up the Greek economy by swiftly unlocking up to one billion euros from the bloc's budget.
"I'd like to ask the European Council to discuss what we can do to assist Greece beyond its consolidation efforts to enhance competitiveness and address the urgent problem of unemployment," Barroso said at a news conference held ahead of an EU summit Thursday and Friday.
Over 43 percent of Greeks queried in the Mega channel survey by pollsters GPO expressed hope that the EU, the IMF and the European Central Bank could be persuaded to renegotiate the terms of the economic rescue.
Greece needs the 12-billion-euro ($17-billion-dollar) loan instalment to pay bills next month.
A much bigger issue for the whole eurozone is a second loan package, expected to be around 100 billion euros, needed by Athens to avoid default on its debt in the months and years ahead.
Germany insists this second emergency package must include losses for private lenders such as banks and insurance companies, as well as more pain for taxpayers.
But rating agencies have warned that this could spell default even if supposedly voluntary, and the European Central Bank has said that in that event it might be forced to cut lifeline financing to Greek banks.
A Greek default would hit European banks hard, but would also likely damage investor sentiment towards Ireland and Portugal, already being rescued, and Spain and even Italy and Belgium which have high debt loads.

Breaking News: Charities slammed over animal tests
A campaign has been launched to boycott four leading medical charities accused of supporting "horrific" animal experiments.
Welfare group Animal Aid is urging members of the public to halt donations to Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society and Parkinson's UK.
The organisation has published a report, Victims of Charity, highlighting charity-funded tests that were said to cause "appalling suffering" to animals such as mice, monkeys, pigs and dogs. Examples included damaging the brains of monkeys with toxic chemicals, slowly destroying dogs' hearts, grafting cancer into animals and the use of diseased genetically engineered "mutants".
The campaign is backed by national newspaper adverts as well as postcards for members of the public to send to the charity chief executives with their comments. Animal Aid is calling on the public to withhold financial support from the four charities until they pledge to stop funding animal experiments.
Director Andrew Tyler said: "Animal Aid is under no illusions as to the pro-animal research lobby's significant financial and political clout. But the British public do not like the idea of animals enduring great suffering to no purpose, and Victims of Charity argues that this is precisely what is happening."
The report, written by a hospital doctor and a veterinary surgeon, is based on published accounts of experimental procedures and reviews in leading specialist journals. In total, 66 charities were identified that used public donations to fund animal research. However, the four named charities were singled out as organisations of "some standing and authority".
Dr David Scott, director of science funding at Cancer Research UK, responded: "In certain areas, research involving animals remains essential to understand, prevent and treat cancer. We do no research with monkeys, dogs or cats. We have strict ethical policies in relation to animals and follow rigorous Government guidelines to ensure that animals are only used where there's no alternative."
Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "The majority of our research programme does not involve animals and where there is no alternative we use maggots, fruit flies, mice and rats only. Our researchers are bound by animal welfare rules, which are the strictest in the world."
Peter Hollins, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: "Our research has contributed to incredible medical advances over the decades. Many adults and children are only alive today thanks to pioneering treatments such as heart failure medicines, pacemakers and heart transplants which couldn't have been achieved without involving animals."
Dr Kieran Breen, director of research and development at Parkinson's UK, said: "Parkinson's UK invests around ?4.6 million per year in a wide range of research projects looking at all aspects of Parkinson's because we are committed to finding better treatments and a cure. A small but vital part of our research involves animals and is rigorously controlled by UK legislation."
