How to Do Exterior Painting

?

Painting the exterior of the house differs somewhat from painting the interior. You?ll need different paint, extra painting equipment, and some special techniques. You may also find exterior surfaces more difficult to prepare and paint because they?re often weathered by sun, wind, rain, or snow. In the Philippines, we don?t have snow, though.

?

When should you paint?

?

The right time to repaint a house is just before it needs painting?not after. If you repaint too often, you?ll end up with a too-thick coating that?s brittle. It will be subject to cracking and flaking because it won?t be able to adjust to structural movements of the house. On the other hand, if you allow the paint to deteriorate too badly, you?ll find it harder to restore the surface to a good appearance. Signs of a surface worn badly enough to warrant repainting include these: the wood grain becomes more pronounced, the primer shows through, and the color fades.

?

Selecting the right paint

?

The guidelines below will help you select the best paint for the job. Before making a final decision, though, consult your paint dealer. Also, check the label on the paint can for possible warnings about painting in low or extremely high temperature and humidity levels?this advice can make or break a paint job.

?

Exterior latex paints

?

These paints have the same qualities as interior latex paints. Latex is recommended for all exterior wood, masonry, stucco, concrete, and cinder block surfaces. It?s also suitable for galvanized metal and cement-asbestos boards.

?

Two special outdoor latex paints are available for certain situations: use exterior latex trim enamel on exterior trim, doors, and woodworks; apply latex masonry paint to brick, stucco, concrete, and cinder block.

?

Exterior oil-based paints

?

These are the preferred finishes for exterior surfaces where durability and gloss are required:

Use exterior oil-based enamels on all properly primed wood surfaces, such as siding, sashes, trim, shutters, and doors, and metal surfaces like gutters, rails, and steel sashes.

Exterior flat finish is recommended primarily for rough siding, board and batten, and cedar shingles and shakes. It can also be used on other properly primed surfaces and may be thinned enough for use as a heavy-bodied stain (but a prepared stain will do a better job).

Porch-and-deck paints are available for use on both concrete and wood surfaces. If the concrete surface is glossy, roughen it with muriatic acid before applying the paint so the new paint will adhere. Apply a primer to wood surfaces before using porch-and-deck paints.

?

Spar varnishes

?

Tougher than interior varnishes, spar varnishes are recommended for such exterior surfaces as doors, sashes, trim, and siding.

?

Penetrating wood stains

?

These semi-transparent stains highlight the grain and texture of wood, and are available in both oil-based and water-based types.

?

Solid color stains

?

Thick enough to produce a nearly opaque finish, these stains are available in both oil-based and water-based paints.

?

Cement powder paint

?

This is a popular, low-cost finish for unpainted masonry and other unpainted rough surfaces, including brick, block, stucco, and concrete. It?s a powder composed of white Portland cement, pigments, and a small amount of water repellent. Before application, you add water to get the right consistency.

?

Tools and supplies you need

?

In addition to brushes and rollers recommended for interior painting, you may need larger applicators for exterior surfaces. Block brushes?ranging from 4 to 6 inches wide?will help you cover large flat surfaces quickly. A big, thick-napped roller is another time-saving tool. Also available are large applicator pads that can be attached to standard-size pad applicator frames.

?

Consider using a compressed-air spray painting system for large areas. It?s a fast technique for painting the exterior of your house. Also ask about the ?airless? spray unit. It produces a direct spray of pure paint without any overspray.

?

An extension ladder is a must for exterior painting, particularly for two-storey homes. For stability, place the ladder on firm, level ground at a distance from the house equal to a quarter of the vertical distance from the ground to the top rung.

?

If the paint is badly worn, make surface preparation easier by using large scrapers, wire brushes, and an electric sander. For other repairs, you may need window sash putty, stucco or masonry patching compound, and a little carpentry skill.?

Instructions

1

Preparing the surface

As with interior painting, the most important part of exterior painting is surface preparation. Here?s a check list of things you may need to do:

Remove outdoor light fixtures, hardware, screens, shutters, and house numbers for separate painting.

Repair any structural damage.

Repair peeling, flaking, and mildew damage and remedy their causes.

Reset of replace popped-out nails.

Roughen high gloss areas so the finish? coat will adhere better.

Cover bare wood surfaces with a primer.

Seal open joints around windows and trim with caulking compound.

Hose off dirt and excessive chalking of old paint.

Replace any loose or missing window putty.

Pull plants away from walls with rope or heavy twine and cover them with drop cloths.

Place drop cloths where necessary to protect patios, porches, and other floor surfaces.

2

Where to start painting

Because the color of the paint can changes dramatically when exposed to the elements over a period of time, it?s important to finish painting the exterior of your house in one season.

It?s best to begin at the top of the house and work down, applying paint to areas within comfortable reaching distance as you stand on the ladder. Start with gutters, top portions of downspouts, eaves, peaks, gables, or porch ceilings. (Use rust-resistant paint for the inside of gutters.) Don?t apply paint too quickly to surfaces protected from the elements. Little wear occurs in these places, and an overly thick coating will quickly crack and peel.

Still working from the top down, paint the house walls as you would interior walls. On horizontal wood siding, apply paint to the bottom edges of two or three boards; then smooth out the paint on the flat surface. Force paint into rough surfaces, such as shingles and shakes, to fill the crevices.

As you work down the ladder, leave a very lightly painted edge along areas you?ve finished. After you?ve moved the ladder and are painting another top-to-bottom strip, you?ll paint over these light edges and not create a heavy overlap. Paint the trim, windows, and doors, following the interior painting procedures.

Porches, patios, and steps are next (remember to leave one access to the house unpainted while the others are drying). Don?t forget metal railings and other accessories.

Finally, paint the items you removed from the house and replace them after they?ve dried completely.

Exxon Mobil says oil leaked into Yellowstone River (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A pipeline operated by Exxon Mobil Corp leaked as many as 1,000 barrels of crude oil into the Yellowstone River in Montana and has been shut down, the company said.

Exxon officials said on Sunday there were traces of oil up to 10 miles downriver from the site of what they called a "very unusual" event.

The oil company said it had slowed processing rates at its Billings refinery following the leak but did not expect supply disruptions in the area.

Exxon found the leak from the EMPCo pipeline early on Saturday morning. The pipeline runs only in Montana, from Silver Tip to Billings.

The cause of the leak remains unclear. Exxon estimated the oil release at anywhere from 750 to 1,000 barrels. One barrel of oil is equivalent to 42 gallons (163 liters), and the pipeline typically transports 40,000 barrels a day.

"We had no indications that there were any issues with this pipeline," Gary Pruessing, the president of EMPCo, told reporters on a conference call on Sunday.

Pruessing said the pipeline had been shut in May as a precaution as the river approached a high-water point, but that it was judged to be safe and turned back on.

The Billings Gazette on Sunday cited conflicting reports from Exxon officials as to the extent of the leak. The paper carried pictures of absorbent bags piled along the side of a road running parallel to the river, ribbons of oil sticking to logs and one of a turtle stuck in oily mud.

Environmental cleanup firm Clean Harbors is on-site assisting with the early remediation efforts, Exxon said.

The leak came one day after a Maryland jury awarded plaintiffs suing Exxon $1.5 billion in damages for a 2006 leak at a gasoline station.

Exxon said a claims hotline it set up for the Montana spill had already received 41 calls.

Toshiba Satellite P775-S7215

The Toshiba Satellite P775-S7215 ($974.99 list at Best Buy) is a 17.3-inch media center laptop that specializes in providing consumers with a well-rounded multimedia experience. Between the Blu-ray player and powerful Core i7 processor, you'll be ready to tackle online videos and then some. Its trouble spots? No True 1080p HD, and a lid with some flexing.

Design
Toshiba has spiced up the P775-S7215's plastic enclosure by adding raised lines going across the lid and palm rest, creating a more dynamic look. The laptop weighs 6.32 pounds, which is relatively light compared with other 17-inch laptops like the 7.04-pound HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl ($999.99 list, 4 stars), 7-pound Pavilion dv7-4283cl ($999.99 list, 4 stars), and 6.7-pound Dell Inspiron 17R-2950MRB ($949.99 list, 4 stars). The discrepancy is because of the P775-S7215's smaller 6-cell 48Wh battery.

The 17.3-inch screen has a 1,600-by-900 (720p) resolution. Videophiles who are looking for True 1080p HD can utilize the HDMI or Wireless Display (WiDi 2.0) feature to stream video content wired or wirelessly (provided you have a Netgear Push2TV ($99 list, 4 stars) receiver). If you want mobile HD at your fingertips, however, you'll have to pay for something more along the lines of the Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct, 4 stars). I did notice some flexing in the lid when I closed it. The full sized keyboard and adjacent numeric keypad, are in the chiclet style and provides a solid typing experience. The multi-touchpad supports pinch-zoom functions and one-finger touch to click. The two mouse buttons were easy enough to click. Above the keyboard is a strip of touch buttons that turn the Wi-Fi on and off, turn the lighting on the touchpad and touch strip on and off, play/pause media, mute, and control volume.

Features
Connection options abound in this laptop: An SD card slot, 3 USB 2.0 ports, audio jacks, VGA, Ethernet, and a USB 3.0 port with a feature called "Sleep and Charge" that allows you to power-up your devices while your computer is turned off, provided the PC is plugged in. There's also a Blu-ray player, so you can watch HD movies. Aside from the Ethernet jack, there are two other ways you can tap into the interwebs on this laptop: via the 802.11 Wi-Fi and WiMAX, which is a subscription-based service that allows you to log onto the Web via a 4G wireless connection that can compete with some home DSL packages in terms of broadband speeds. Towers, to provide this service, have been erected in major metropolitan areas, in over 54 cities.

The hard drive is a sizable 750GB, and spins at a fast 7,200rpm?fast considering most other laptops at this size and price point, like the HP dv7-6143cl's 750GB drive spins at a slower 5,400rpm. Also when the Satellite is jostled, Toshiba initiates a hard drive protection program to prevent possible damage from vibrations.

Best Buy has an extended warranty program, which offers customers an extra year of protection beyond the one-year warranty of most system manufacturers. There are two plans in this extended warranty program. The standard plan ($119.99) covers the system against normal wear and tear, power surge damage, and includes a "No Lemon" guarantee in which Best Buy will simply replace the computer if it requires more than 4 repairs during the coverage period. Best Buy's advanced plan ($219.99) offers all this, and also covers the laptop against accidental damage from drops and spills. Other special offers can be found online or in stores, like discounts on printers, software, and tech support plans which are available with any new consumer PC purchased through Best Buy.

Performance
Toshiba Satellite-P775-S7215 The Satellite P775-S7215 comes equipped with a 2GHz second-generation Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core processor and 6GB of memory. These internal components helped it garner high scores in our PCMark 7 test (2,199) for overall computing power. The Editors' Choice HP dv7-6143cl scored only 103 points higher, which isn't enough to deem one superior to the other. In more multimedia-oriented tests, the P775-S7215 and HP dv7-6143cl scored the same times on our Photoshop CS5 image filtering test (3 minute 52 seconds) and Handbrake video encoding test (1:37).

The P775-S7215's lack of a discrete graphics chip doesn't mean you can't do some 3D gaming. You will be restricted to older games like Team Fortress 2, or light 3D games like World of Warcraft. Just be sure to check out the system requirements before you buy. If you're looking for something with a little more oomph to play games, the HP dv7-6143cl is equipped with an AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics chip.

The 48Wh 6-cell battery of the P775-S7215's helped it manage 4 hours 10 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test. Other laptops in this category are usually equipped with 90Wh or 100Wh batteries like the Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) ($1,039.98 direct, 4 stars) and HP dv7-6143cl, which garnered times of 7:51 and 9:13, respectively.

The Toshiba Satellite P775-S7215 is a great multimedia laptop with a lot of connectivity options, like WiDi 2.0 and WiMAX. Even its inclusion of Blu-ray will delight video enthusiast. It would have been nice, however, if Toshiba had included a bigger battery with the laptop. It may not be able to overthrow the HP dv7-6143cl as Editors' Choice, but if you're looking for a laptop with Blu-ray and you're not a huge gamer, then the P775-S 7215 can provide.

What You Want To Know About Limo Service ? ArticleCatalogue.com

It generally is a hectic process if we are trying to find one of the best limousine company. With so many startup corporations and single drivers, it?s very easy to make a mistake. This article will give you some basic suggestions and information on what to search for when choosing a limo service.

The very first thing you must do is find a directory or phone book on-line related to limo services. There?s not less than ten limo service directories online that will provide you with local listings. You may also do a search by typing in your location and the word ?limo company? or ?limo service?. This should provide you with 3-5 corporations that you would be able to call. Be careful on the companies you choose. Some firms may be tailored to a specific niche. Some limo companies are for personal folks like celebrities and diplomats, for example. Other firms will be more public friendly for things like weddings, proms and party buses. You must be capable to look on their site and see what areas they are specialised in. Now that you have your list of service providers, you should be sure to ask the proper questions.

The two things you should always remember are price and quality, however that?s really depend on what you?re looking for. Price could be very easy to judge as you?ll be able to simply compare rates. For prom you will most definitely go together with the cheapest rate, just don?t go too cheap as I?m a big believer in you get what you pay for. Also, if an offer is just too good to be true, it?s and do not be afraid to walk away from it. Quality on the other hand, is a lot tougher to judge. You may want to get some recent testimonials for other brides and grooms if you?re planning on a wedding. It goes without saying that you want your wedding ceremony to be perfect so pays to go the extra mile and perhaps slightly extra cash to ensure you have the right limo service for what could be the most memorable day of your life.

Finally, after you have decided on the proper limo firm, be sure you call a few days in advance to ensure you are booked and they?re aware of your date. The last thing you want is for them to make reserving error and leave you waiting to be picked up. This guild gave you a break down of what to anticipate and what to search for when selecting a service. And keep in mind, riding in a limousine for many is a very fun and thrilling experience. The best memories of that bachelor party or that once in a life-time prom shall be remembered, because most limo firms know this and can do their best serving you.

Debra prefers to author on limo services sector. She uses a limo business as well as an auto carrier station.
