NFL TV schedule, Week 4: What will you be watching on a 49ers day off?

We take a look at the TV schedule for Week 4 of the 2013 NFL season. With the 49ers finished for the week, there will be plenty of football to watch.

The San Francisco 49ers will have Sunday off as they recover from Thursday Night Football. That means 49ers fans get a chance to relax and watch Sunday football without too much anxiety. Or, maybe you end up taking care of errands and just catching a little football when you get some time. Either way, it will hopefully be a relaxing Sunday for 49ers fans.

FOX would appear to have the better slate of games for today. The FOX AM session includes the 3-0 Bears taking on the 2-1 Lions, and the 3-0 Seahawks at the 2-1 Texans. For the AM session, it looks like a sizable chunk of America, including the Bay Area, will get the Seahawks-Texans (per 506sports.com). Out here in the DC area, we'll be getting the Giants vs. the Chiefs. Chefs Watch continues in glory!

The CBS AM schedule includes the 2-1 Ravens at the 1-2 Bills. I actually think that could be a fun game to watch. The 2-1 Bengals travel to face the 1-2 Browns in a pretty important early season AFC North matchup. The Bengals are looking solid, and while the Browns appear set to completely torch their season, that defense has the players to keep them in games.

Much of America will get Steelers vs. Vikings, which is the first of two London games this season. If you want to see the stadium where the 49ers and Jaguars will play in a few weeks, check this game out. Wembley Stadium is an amazing facility.

The afternoon schedule features a few interesting matchups. The Eagles travel to face the Broncos in a game the Broncos should win. The Eagles can put up points, but their defense struggles to the point where the Broncos very well could put up 50 on Philly.

What games will you be watching today? Here is a rundown of the games on each network:

FOX

(3-0) Bears at (2-1) Lions
(3-0) Seahawks at (2-1) Texans
(0-3) Giants at (3-0) Chiefs
(1-2) Cardinals at (0-3) Buccaneers
(1-2) Eagles at (3-0) Broncos
(0-3) Redskins at (1-2) Raiders
(2-1) Cowboys at (1-2) Chargers

CBS

(2-1) Ravens at (1-2) Bills
(2-1) Bengals at (1-2) Browns
(2-1) Colts at (0-3) Jaguars
(0-3) Steelers at (0-3) Vikings
(2-1) Jets at (2-1) Titans

NBC

(3-0) Patriots at (1-2) Falcons

Exit Sandman: Rivera bids goodbye to Bronx

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mariano Rivera said goodbye to Yankee Stadium with hugs, tears and cheers.

Baseball's most acclaimed relief pitcher made an emotional exit in his final appearance in the Yankees' home pinstripes, when captain Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte came to the mound to remove him with two outs in the ninth inning of a 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.

"It's time to go," Jeter appeared to tell Rivera.

Tampa Bay won its seventh straight and leads the AL wild-card race.

During four minutes of thunderous chanting from the sellout crowd 48,675, an overcome Rivera sobbed as he buried his head on the shoulder of Pettitte, who also is retiring when the season ends Sunday, and then hugged Jeter.

"I was bombarded with emotions and feelings," Rivera said. "Everything hit. I knew that's the last time. Period."

Said Pettitte: "I could feel him crying on me."

It was an extraordinary sight in a sport where a manager almost always goes to the mound to make a pitching change. Yankees manager Joe Girardi checked with the umpires to make certain Jeter, who is on the disabled list, could take part.

"I was so thankful they came out," Rivera said after the game.

Rivera, who retired four straight batters, wiped his eyes with both arms as he walked off and blew a kiss to the first row behind the Yankees dugout. He hugged a tearful Girardi in the dugout, grabbed a towel to dab his own tears, and came out again and doffed his cap to the crowd. All the while, the Rays remained in their dugout applauding.

Throughout the stands, fans blinked back tears.

When Rivera came off, Pettitte came out for his own curtain call as the Rays waited. After the last out, Rivera remained on the bench for a moment as "New York, New York" played.

The 43-year-old Rivera then took a final walk to the mound, where he stood, rubbed his feet on the rubber, kneeled and gathered dirt as a keepsake.

Rivera had entered with one out and two on in the eighth to a recorded introduction by Bob Sheppard, the longtime Yankees public address announcer who died three years ago.

Fans stood, applauded and chanted his name as he jogged in from the bullpen to Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and continued for two minutes as he took his warmups. The entire Tampa Bay bench emptied and stood on the dirt warning track in front of the dugout and applauded.

Fans remained on their feet, chanting his name as he got two quick outs on six pitches. In his first appearance since the Yankees retired his No. 42 during a 50-minute ceremony Sunday, Rivera retired Delmon Young on a groundout and Sam Fuld on a comebacker.

He lingered on the dugout bench when the eighth inning ended and took in the whole stadium scene as he teammates ran onto the field. Rivera jogged out last and was given another standing ovation. With the crowd shouting at a postseason level, he retired Jose Lobaton on a comebacker and Yunel Escobar on a popup to second before the famous, final scene.

The Yankees, eliminated from playoff contention, finish the season with three games in Houston.

The oldest player in the major leagues, Rivera record 314 of his record 652 saves at home during a 19-year big league career, and 18 of his record 42 postseason saves were at the old and new Yankee Stadium.

Rivera helped the Yankees to five World Series titles, getting the final out in four of them.

Tampa Bay lowered to two its magic number over Texas for clinching an AL wild-card berth. The Rays swept this three-game series, outscoring the Yankees 19-3.

Alex Cobb (11-3) took a one-hit shutout into the eighth, retiring 15 in a row between walks to Curtis Granderson in the second and Robinson Cano in the seventh. He wound up allowing three hits in seven innings-plus.

Evan Longoria hit an RBI single in the fourth against Ivan Nova (9-6) and a two-run single off Dellin Betances in the eighth. Young hit a long solo homer to left-center in the sixth.

New York has lost nine of 12, including four in a row, and at 82-77 will have its fewest wins in a non-shortened season since

A night after the Yankees were eliminated from contention ? missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years ? it was a night for nostalgia. Rivera's 42 ? he's the last player to wear Jackie Robinson's old number ? was painted in foul territory in front of each dugout.

Rivera, who announced during spring training that this would be his final season, was given his first standing ovation of the night when he met with Yankees employees in the interview room across the tunnel from the Yankees clubhouse. He lingered on the field during batting practice, signing autographs for fans. And just before the first pitching, there was another set of presentations at home plate ? a daily fixture during the final homestand.

Chants of "Mar-i-a-no!" began three pitches in. Fans cheered every time Rivera and Pettitte appeared on the center-field video board, and sustained "Mar-i-a-no!" chants resumed when he started warming up in the bullpen in the top of the eighth. Fans screamed "We want Mo!" after Longoria's single gave the Rays a four-run lead.

More honors are ahead this weekend, when the Yankees finish the season at Houston. The Astros plan a pregame ceremony Sunday that will include former New York manager Joe Torre and former Rivera teammate Roger Clemens.

NOTES: Matt Daley is sure to be the answer to a future trivia question ? he was the pitcher who relieved Rivera. ... Rivera had not entered a game with the Yankees trailing by four runs or more since May 20, 2008, against Baltimore, according to STATS. ... The Yankees drew an AL-high 3,279,589, their lowest in five seasons at new Yankee Stadium and down from 3.54 million last year. Their average of 40,488 was their lowest since 40,346 in 2000, according to STATS. The Yankees had just seven sellouts. ... New York hit 75 home runs at Yankee Stadium, its lowest home total since 75 in 1997. ... Girardi wouldn't comment on an ESPN report that Cano, who is eligible for free agency, is seeking a 10-year deal worth a record $305 million. ... Bothered by sore legs, 3B Alex Rodriguez didn't play. ... Tampa Bay SS Yunel Escobar (sore left ankle) was in the original starting lineup, then was scratched. He entered in the seventh inning. ... Rays manager Joe Maddon wasn't sure whether RHP Jesse Crain (right shoulder strain) will pitch during the rest of the regular season.

Is The Customer the Enemy? | The Business Ethics Blog

Earlier this week I blogged about the intersection between customer service, ethics, and public relations. I pointed out that when the occasional grouchy remark turns into a pattern of disrespect, customer service becomes a question of ethics, and ? in an age of social media ? a potential PR nightmare.

But this raises a bigger question about the nature of the relationship between a business and its customers. Is the relationship between buyer and seller appropriately thought of as an adversarial one or a cooperative one? Ethically, is it right for a company to think of customers as friends or foes?

There are intuitive reasons on both sides. On one hand, buyer and seller have a shared interest in ?doing the deal.? They typically want to do business with each other, and both benefit from the transaction. On the other hand, every dollar a buyer saves is a dollar lost from the seller?s point of view. Every buyer wants a low price and every seller wants a high price, so the conflict is built right in.

We can name at least four different approaches to arriving at an answer to this question.

We might try looking at the question from the point of view of everyday ethics: people are people, and we should treat them honestly and with respect regardless of who they are. If fairness is good, then we should promote fairness in commercial transactions, just as we do in other areas of life. And that requires that buyer and seller at least see each other as equals. They don?t have to adopt a cooperative stance, but neither should they be adversarial.

We could instead take an economic approach. From an economic point of view, the interaction between buyer and seller is best understood as a ?mixed motive? game. In other words, it?s a game in which the players? respective rankings of possible outcomes partly coincide and partly diverge. Both players would rather do a deal than not do a deal, but they disagree over what the best deal would be. If you?re in such a game, you should adopt an attitude that is neither fully cooperative nor fully adversarial. Unless, of course, displaying one of those attitudes moves the deal in your direction.

Third, we might think about this from the point of view of social conventions. It may well be that in certain cultures it is traditional (and perhaps widely accepted) that buyers and sellers treat each other as adversaries. And perhaps in certain other cultures it is traditional (and expected) that buyers and sellers will treat each other in a more convivial way. There are likely even individual industries typified by one or the other of those conventions. Doctors, for instance, are trained (and incentivized) to adopt a collaborative approach to their patients. Some stock brokers have notoriously adopted an adversarial approach to their clients.

Finally, we might think of this question from the point of view of corporate strategy. In other words, whether you think of your customers as friends or enemies ? whether you adopt a collaborative or instead competitive attitude to them ? might be a question of what kind of company you want to be. Some companies thrive on aggressive sales tactics; others thrive on a softer, more relationship-driven approach. Seen from this point of view, there?s no single, general answer to the question. Each firm needs to answer it for itself.

Regardless of how you frame the question, and regardless of the answer you arrive at, the attitude your company adopts towards customers is bound to become well known, especially in an era in which reputation spreads via Facebook and Twitter. Seller beware!

Pakistan releases top Afghan Taliban prisoner

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan released its highest-ranking Afghan Taliban prisoner on Saturday in an effort to jump-start Afghanistan's struggling peace process, Pakistani officials said, but some doubt he will make much of a difference.

The Afghan government has long demanded that Pakistan free Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban's former deputy leader who was arrested in a joint raid with the CIA in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi in 2010.

The United States is also keen for the Afghan government to strike a peace deal with the Taliban before it withdraws most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. But the U.S. pressured Pakistan not to release Baradar because of concerns he would return to the battlefield, officials said.

Baradar will remain in Pakistan after his release and will be provided with tight security, said Pakistani intelligence and security officials who confirmed that he was freed but did not provide details, including where he was held. He will be free to meet with anyone he chooses, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry announced earlier that Baradar would be released Saturday "to further facilitate the Afghan reconciliation process."

Mohammad Ismail Qasimyar, a member of the council tasked by the Afghan government to negotiate with the Taliban, praised Baradar's release, saying "we are very much hopeful that Mullah Baradar can play an important role in the peace process."

Baradar, who is around 50 years old, was one of the founding members of the Taliban along with the group's leader Mullah Omar. He served as a senior military leader and defense minister after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 1996.

Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil, who served as foreign minister when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, also hailed Bardar's release and cautioned Pakistan not to try to control his movements now that he is free.

"They also have to allow him contact with Taliban leaders and for him to be useful for peace in Afghanistan," Muttawakil told The Associated Press.

Not everyone agreed that Baradar's release would contribute to peace, saying his long imprisonment had robbed him of both his influence and position in the Taliban.

"This is a very, very meager step. It will not bring peace. It is just a show," said Mohammad Daoud Sultanzai, an Afghan political commentator and talk show host. "He doesn't have an importance among the Taliban leadership, or any other leadership that would be able to deliver anything with authority."

Pakistan has released at least 33 Taliban prisoners over the last year at the Afghan government's request in an attempt to boost peace negotiations between the insurgents and Kabul.

But there is no sign that the previous releases have helped peace talks, and some of the prisoners are believed to have returned to the fight against the Afghan government. The releases ended up causing friction with Kabul ? and Washington ? which were both frustrated that Pakistan was not monitoring the whereabouts and activities of the former inmates.

The U.S. asked Pakistan to keep Baradar under house arrest rather than set him free, said senior Pakistani and American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Pakistan refused the request, saying it would infuriate both the Afghan government and the Taliban, said the American official. The U.S. believes Baradar is one of the smartest members of the Taliban and is worried he could give the group a strategic leg-up in its battle against Afghan security forces if he rejoins the insurgency, the official said.

The circumstances surrounding Baradar's arrest in Karachi were murky. Afghan officials said at the time that he was holding secret peace talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and accused Pakistan of arresting him to sabotage or gain control of the process. Both Baradar and Karzai are from the same tribe.

But American officials said the CIA was the driving force behind the arrest and Pakistani security forces who participated in the raid did not know they were detaining the Taliban's deputy commander.

Pakistan is a key player in Afghan peace talks because of its historical ties to the Taliban. Islamabad helped the Taliban seize control of Afghanistan in 1996 and is widely believed to have maintained ties with the group, despite official denials.

But there is also significant distrust between the two, and Pakistan has arrested dozens of Taliban militants in the years following the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 ? possibly to hold as bargaining chips.

Pakistan has increasingly pushed for a peace settlement because it is worried that chaos in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of most U.S. combat troops by the end of 2014 could make it more difficult to fight its own domestic Taliban militants. It could also send a flood of new refugees into Pakistan.

The most recent attempt to push forward peace negotiations foundered in June in the Qatari capital of Doha. The Afghan president pulled the plug on the talks even before they began because he was angered that the group marked the opening of its Doha political office with the flag, anthem and symbols of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ? the group's name when they ruled the country.

Another major hurdle to restarting talks is Washington's reluctance to release five senior Taliban commanders being held at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, according to the American official.

Five Social Media Mistakes To Avoid - Internet Marketing Academy

September 19, 2013

ID-100147860As you know by now, social media is an important part of your marketing strategy. Unfortunately, too many business owners make mistakes that cost them potential customers and, in some cases, their reputations. For a successful marketing campaign, avoid making the following blunders.

1. Ignoring Social Media Altogether

Don?t make the mistake of thinking that social media is silly or unimportant. The payoff of social media marketing can be huge. Its benefits include brand recognition, word of mouth marketing, reputation management, and improved relationships with your customers (which means more information about your customers).

2. Talking About Yourself Constantly

In business relationships, just as in personal ones, talking about yourself all the time never works. Think of social media as a conversation, not a selling tool. Social media affords you the opportunity to engage your customers, listen to them, and help them out by posting relevant content. A little promotion is one thing ? especially when you have a notable event going on, like a contest ? but this isn?t the place for nonstop advertisements, and they won?t be well-received.

3. Talking About Stuff You Shouldn?t Talk About At All

Keeping your posts personable is a good idea ? how your day went, what you?re up to, what?s new with your business ? but don?t confuse personable with personal. For example, you should never say anything negative about customers, no matter how difficult the woman you dealt with the day before was. Never complain about them or about interactions you had with them, and never mention anything that?s overly personal.

4. Trying To Maintain A Presence On Every Platform

The more websites you are active on, the more time and money they require. A poll on your website is one tool that can help you discern which social networks are most used by your customers; then you can start there. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all good starting points. Pinterest is gaining on them, too, and provides unique marketing opportunities. Choose one or two that align with your goals as a business and focus on them.

5. Expecting It To Be Free

Simply having a Facebook page is not social media marketing. A successful marketing strategy involves engagement and dialogue and humanising your brand; it also involves planning and dedicated resources. ?If you?re gonna go, go all out? is particularly applicable to social media marketing. Understand what your goals are, how you will accomplish them, and who will be in charge of the project. By the way, this is where some younger talent on staff can really benefit your business. Older employees can certainly have great computer skills, but the younger ones were practically born understanding social media. Take advantage of their knowledge.

?

Thanks!

Apple shows off iOS 7 on iPhone 5c in new 'Designed Together' ad

Along with the new Plastic Perfected ad, Apple has debuted another ad extolling the virtues of the iPhone 5c. This one is called Designed Together.

The ad emphasizes how the design elements of iOS 7 combine with the colorful exterior of the iPhone 5c, using cues inspired by iOS 7's design language, like thin lines and lots of zoom effects. The multicolored new Photos icon recedes into the iPhone 5c's camera lens, for example, while the red exterior of an iPhone 5c dissolves into the Music icon, blending into the music controls of Control Center. Blue Messages dialogue bubbles match the color of the blue iPhone 5c, and so on.

Apple describes the new video on its official iTunes channel:

In the new iPhone 5c, color is more than just something you see. The hardware and software are designed together so you feel color throughout the entire experience.

The ad runs for 54 seconds, ending with a colorful array of iPhone 5cs in their Apple cases, then the logo for the new phone and the words "Coming soon. Case sold separately."

What do you think of the new ad? Does Apple do a good job of explaining the similarities between the iPhone 5c and iOS 7? Does it put the colorful plastic shell of the iPhone 5c in a different light? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Investors jostle ahead of Fed decision on future stimulus

By Wayne Cole

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian markets kept their nerve on Wednesday counting on the Federal Reserve to launch only a modest scaling back of stimulus later in the day, though all assets were vulnerable to any hint of hawkishness from the world's most powerful central bank.

Expectations are that the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will be measured with any cuts to its $85 billion in monthly asset buying, while also seeking to reassure investors that the day of an actual policy tightening is still distant.

That kept the dollar pinned near a four-week trough against a basket of major currencies <.dxy>, as the euro crept up to $1.3360 and nearer the week's peak of $1.3385.

On the yen, the greenback idled at 99.20 around the middle of its recent 98.45-100.62 range.

After months of speculation about the Fed's intentions, caution ruled in most stock markets ahead of the looming decision, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> off a slight 0.2 percent. Shanghai shares eased 0.2 percent <.ssec>, as did Australia's main index <.axjo>.

Japan's Nikkei <.n225> was the main standout with a jump of 1.35 percent, after reaching its highest since late July.

Stock futures in Europe pointed to smalls gains of 0.2 to 0.3 percent for Germany and France.

For the Fed, consensus has congealed around a reduction of $10-$15 billion a month with all purchases ending by the middle of next year. Yet even that cautious timetable would be contingent on the economy performing as well as hoped.

With such an outcome largely priced in, it could lead Treasuries and the dollar to rally modestly. A slower tapering would tend to benefit bonds and stocks but hurt the dollar.

The bigger reaction would likely come if the Fed pulled back more aggressively, as that would lead market to price in an earlier start to rate rises as well.

That would be especially painful for emerging market countries that rely on foreign capital to fund current account deficits, with India and Indonesia among the most vulnerable.

The tension was evident in Jakarta where both shares <.jkse> and the rupiah came under pressure.

DEVIL IN THE DETAIL

Still, dealers warned against a hasty reaction as there were so many moving parts in play.

As well as the tapering, the Fed may choose to alter its threshold for tightening, perhaps by lowering the trigger level on unemployment from the current 6.5 percent.

It will also publish its first economic forecasts for 2016 and the stronger the picture the harder it will be to convince markets that any future rise in interest rates will only be slow and measured.

Indeed, the Fed has already had trouble convincing the market that it intends to keep rates near zero out to 2015 no matter how much the economy improves.

The decision and economic projections are out at 1800 GMT while Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke starts his press conference half an hour later. Often markets can react violently to the former, then completely reverse course depending on what Bernanke says.

"We expect Bernanke's press conference to be dovish. The Fed will want to temper market expectations that tapering will be rapid or that FOMC participants have brought forward their expectations for the first increase in rates," says Joseph Capurso, currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

"While the dollar may soften after the FOMC meeting, our medium term view of a stronger dollar is unchanged," he added, citing higher US yields and the diverging outlook for rates between the United States and other rich nations.

While yields on 10-year Treasury notes were a tick lower at 2.84 percent on Wednesday, that is up from just 1.62 percent back in May before the Fed first raised the spectre of tapering.

For commodities, the more dovish the outcome from the Fed the more supportive for prices. Copper futures were a 0.5 percent firmer at $7,109.75 on Wednesday, though still down 11 percent for the year so far.

Spot gold eased back to $1,297.89 an ounce as dealers took a "just in case" attitude to the Fed.

Brent crude for delivery in November fell 16 cents to $108.03 a barrel, but U.S. crude for October delivery added 27 cents to $105.69 a barrel.

Game-winning touchdown confuses Buffalo Bills Twitter account

Published Sunday, Sep 15, 2013 at 4:29 pm EDT Last updated 51 minutes and 24 seconds ago

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-23 thanks to a last-second touchdown pass from E.J. Manuel to Stevie Johnson. The play confused the Panthers secondary, and even the person working the Bills' official Twitter account.

You see, the Bills trailed 23-17 with six seconds left. The touchdown tied the game up at 23, and the extra point gave them the 24-23 lead.

The only thing more questionable than the math used by the Bills' social media department was the coverage by the Panthers' secondary on the touchdown pass.

(AP) ? The cars that normally clog Main Street in Lyons on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park have been replaced by military supply trucks. Shop owners in Estes Park hurriedly cleared their wares in fear that the Big Thompson River will rise again. A plywood sign encouraged residents mucking out their homes to "Hang in there."

Days of rain and floods have transformed the outdoorsy mountain communities in Colorado's Rocky Mountain foothills affectionately known "The Gore-Tex Vortex" from a paradise into a disaster area with little in the way of supplies or services ? and more rain falling Sunday.

The string of communities from Boulder to Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, is a base for backpackers and nature lovers where blue-collar and yuppie sensibilities exist side by side. Now, roadways have crumbled, scenic bridges are destroyed, the site of the bluegrass festival is washed out and most shops are closed.

Chris Rodes, one of Lyons' newest residents, said the change is so drastic that he is considering moving away just two weeks after settling there.

"It's not the same," Rodes said. "All these beautiful places, it's just brown mud."

Estes Park town administrator Frank Lancaster said visitors who would normally flock there during the golden September days should stay away for at least a month, but it could take a year or longer for many of the mountain roadways to be repaired.

Meanwhile, people were still trapped, the nearby hamlet of Glen Haven has been "destroyed" and the continuing rain threatened a new round of flooding, he said.

"We are all crossing our fingers and praying" he said.

The residents who remained or began trickling back ? if they were allowed to do so ? were left to watch out for one another. Restaurateurs and grocers in Lyons were distributing food to their neighbors as others arrived in groups carrying supplies.

Scott Martin, 25, drove the half-hour from Boulder Saturday to deliver drinking water and gasoline to a friend's parents. He fled Lyons amid a torrential downpour on Wednesday night after the mountain stream that cuts through town gushed into his basement.

Martin grew up tubing down the river and hiking the mountains, and like many residents, he still jumps in the water after work. Looking into the cottonwood and aspen trees at the outskirts of town, he wondered when he would be able to do those things again.

"Best case, it's just mud everywhere; in everyone's yard and all the streets," he said.

From the mountain communities east to the plains city of Fort Morgan, numerous pockets of individuals remained cut off by the flooding. Sunday's rain hampered the helicopter searches, and rescuers trekked by ground up dangerous canyon roads to reach some of those homes isolated since Wednesday.

The surging waters have been deadly, with four people confirmed dead and two more missing and presumed dead after their homes were swept away.

Hundreds of people have still not been heard from, but with phone service being restored to some of the areas over the weekend, officials hoped that number would drop as they contacted more stranded people.

As many as 1,000 people in Larimer County were awaiting rescue Sunday, but airlifts were grounded because of the rain, Type 2 Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team commander Shane Del Grosso said.

Hundreds more people are unaccounted for to the south in Boulder County and other flood-affected areas.

In Estes Park, some 20 miles from Lyons, hundreds of homes and cabins were empty. High water still covered several low-lying streets. Where the river had receded, it had left behind up to a foot of mud.

Ironically, the massive Estes Ark ? a former toy store three stories high designed to look like Noah's Ark ? was high and dry.

"I don't know if it's open anymore, but soon it's going to be our only way out," joked Carly Blankfein.

Supplies of gas and groceries had been running low until Route 7 was recently reopened. On Sunday, people were lined up at the one gas station where a tanker had arrived.

At the Aspen and Evergreen Gallery along the town's main street next to the Big Thompson River, owner Tamara Jarolimek was clearing out the shop Sunday in fear that the new wave of rain would cause another surge.

"We only have limited time to get out as much as we can," she said.

At the town's historic Stanley Hotel, the inspiration for Stephen King's "The Shining," clerk Renee Maher said the hotel was nearly empty. Though it sits on a hill overlooking town, the ground was so saturated that water was seeping in through the foundation, and had caused one suite's bathtub to pop out "like a keg," Maher said.

Despite the mess, some people staying in town turned out for the Stanley's nightly ghost tours.

"They said they came because they had nothing to do," Maher said.

In Boulder, often called America's fittest town, Mayor Matt Appelbaum warned people to stay out of the wide-open spaces that ring the city.

"I know that people are eager to get out there again, but it's truly unsafe." he said. "Places that I've known and loved for 30 years are gone."

Boulder remained a refuge for evacuees from the more isolated mountain towns. Meanwhile, water continued to back up in some parts of town and a water treatment plant remained down Sunday.

But the town was bouncing back. Libraries and recreation centers have reopened. Students are again spilling out of cutesy restaurants on Pearl Street, and classes at the University of Colorado are expected to resume Monday.

Deeper in the mountains, people are wondering whether if the rest of the state will move on without them.

"At least it's the slow season, so we have some time to rebuild," Lyons resident Kevin Cray said. "There's going to be cleanup for a long time. Folks are going to have to come together."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tina Brown, the editor who oversaw the ill-fated merger of Newsweek and The Daily Beast website, is parting ways with the company.

That's according to a report by Buzzfeed business editor Peter Lauria, a former Daily Beast correspondent.

The website reported that Brown's contract expires in January and will not be renewed. Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, may take with her the Women in the World conference as part of her severance agreement.

A spokeswoman for IAC/InterActiveCorp, which owns The Daily Beast, declined to comment.

The New York-based company bought Newsweek for $1 in 2010 and, a few months later, merged it with The Daily Beast, which Brown co-founded. The money-losing newsweekly magazine went online-only last year and was sold IBT Media last month.

RMEF?s $140,000 Gift Opens Door to 18,000 Acres of Public Access to the Lewis and Clark National Forest.

MISSOULA, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- A 40-acre acquisition by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will improve access to nearly 18,000 acres of National Forest public lands in central Montana for hunting and other recreational enjoyment.

?This strikes at the heart of what RMEF is all about,? said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. ?We are committed to opening more land for hunting and other year-round recreational public access and now the gate is open for hunters to more easily access thousands of acres of elk country previously almost impossible to reach.?

Recently acquired by RMEF, the property contains a 30-foot common boundary with a corner piece of the Lewis and Clark National Forest (LCNF), best known as home of the Big and Little Snowy Mountains. The transaction is a cooperative effort between the RMEF, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the LCNF, and willing landowners Marshall and Leslie Long.

RMEF purchased the land for $190,000 and will offer it to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks for $50,000, in effect donating the remaining balance of $140,000 to FWP. To complete the land transfer, FWP will launch a public environmental analysis to get the land acquisition approved by the FWP Commission and the Montana Land Board.

RMEF and its partners signed an agreement that sets the stage for the FWP to provide an entrance, parking area, signage and a defined access trail into the forest. The goal is to have the improvements in place by October 26, opening day of the 2013 general big game rifle season.

?This small but critical piece of land offers both big game habitat and exceptional access to public land that supports a prized elk population,? said Gary Bertellotti, FWP Region 4 supervisor. ?FWP wants to thank the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for its efforts to secure the Red Hill property and partnering with FWP to provide access to elk and National Forest public lands for future generations.?

?This is a big win for hunters and other members of the public because there was realistically no easy way to reach this part of the Snowys. This public access will allow hunters to play a more active part with management of an elk herd that is over objective.? added Allen.

Aerial surveys conducted by FWP this past February revealed a population count of approximately 4,000 elk in the Big and Little Snowy Mountains with a calf to cow ratio of 30:100.

The transaction conserves a diverse mixture of aspen and forest, grasslands, meadows, wetlands, and a spring and intermittent stream; and provides important habitat for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, black bear, grouse and a vast array of other wildlife.

Funding for the project came from the Torstenson Family Endowment which is used solely to further RMEF?s core mission programs of permanent land protection, habitat stewardship, elk restoration and hunting heritage.

To date, RMEF projects opened or improved access to approximately 668,000 acres of elk country across the nation.
