Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13

Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 If you got in on this summer's bar argument over which U.S. Olympic basketball team was better, and were convinced that the Dream Team could beat anything that walked the earth, including a team of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, then NBA 2K13 has good news for you.

The United States' 1992 Olympic basketball team of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley prevailed over their 2012 counterparts, 133-126, in a simulation run on NBA 2K13, which releases on Tuesday. It was not a runaway victory, but the Dream Team held a lead for all but one brief instance in the second quarter.

This game was set for two computer-controlled teams to play each other, in full 12-minute quarters, on Hall-of-Fame difficulty (which governs computer-controlled players' behavior.)

2K Sports, at the urging of executive producer Jay-Z, reunited the entire 1992 Olympic team in a video game for the first time in 20 years, mostly to settle the argument Bryant started when he ventured that the 2012 Olympians would win.

Matchups, of course, are at the heart of this argument, and a really bad one in favor of the Dream Team made a huge difference. Chris Paul, paired off against Magic Johnson, just had no answer for a guy eight inches taller and a lot heavier. That's probably a big reason why Magic ended up as the player of the game, leading all scorers with 34 points on 15-of-17 shooting, while adding five rebounds and six assists.

I had some difficulty with video capture in the first quarter, which explains the dearth of highlights from it. Team USA 2012 took a 37-36 lead at 10:45 of the second quarter on a jumper by Russell Westbrook, which you can see above. It was the only lead Team USA 2012 had all game. Twice they got it to within 1 point, the latest with about 9 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Dream Team had very little trouble scoring and forced Team USA 2012 to methodically attack the basket. They only got 14 points on the fast break. A 17-6 run in the fourth quarter still got Team USA 2012 no closer than 5.

Paul still distributed eight assists. Kevin Durant led the 2012 Olympians with 31 points, while James and Bryant each added 22. Carmelo Anthony had a respectable 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of work, hitting all eight of his shots.

Jordan had 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting, with four assists, a steal and a block. Clyde Drexler picked up 16 points, 14 in the first half, before sitting most of the second. Larry Bird played more than he did when he was on this team in real life, as he suffered from back trouble for most of 1992 and was selected mostly in honor of his overall career. He logged 23 minutes in the game and hit all four of his shots, scoring nine points.

Barkley's 34 minutes were the second most of anyone on the Dream Team, and he came away with just six points and four rebounds, matched up against James for most of the evening. David Robinson had probably the game's best dunk, slipping off a screen through a completely vacated lane to throw down a thundering, two-handed, let-me-clear-my throat jam.

Jordan was right that the Dream Team's defense and shot blocking would likely prove the difference, but it wasn't by a wide margin. The Dream Team picked up five steals and four blocks, but Team USA 2012 still shot 62 percent and did a little bit better in rebounding, although having more misses gooses that stat. The teams attempted only seven three point shots combined.

One note: Neither team's lone collegian?Anthony Davis for 2012, Christian Laettner for the Dream Team?got into the game.

NBA 2K13 arrives in stores on Tuesday.

Pakistan: Attack on Hindus prompts blasphemy case

(AP) ? A group of Muslims suspected of ransacking a Hindu temple in southern Pakistan may be charged with blasphemy, police said Sunday. The case is a rare twist on the use of the country's harsh blasphemy laws, which are more often invoked against supposed offenses to Islam as opposed to minority faiths.

The laws, sections of which carry the death penalty or life imprisonment, have drawn renewed international scrutiny this year after a young Christian girl in Islamabad was alleged to have desecrated the Muslim holy book, the Quran. A Muslim cleric now stands accused of fabricating evidence against the girl, who has been freed on bail and whose mental capacity has been questioned.

Police officer Mohammad Hanif said the anti-Hindu attack took place Sept. 21. The government had declared that day a national holiday ? a "Day of Love for the Prophet" ? and called on people to demonstrate peacefully against a U.S.-made anti-Islam film that has sparked protests throughout the Muslim world. Those rallies took a violent turn in Pakistan, and more than 20 people were killed.

Hanif said dozens of Muslims led by a cleric converged on the outskirts of Karachi in a Hindu neighborhood commonly known as Hindu Goth. The protesters attacked the Sri Krishna Ram temple, broke religious statues, tore up a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, and beat up the temple's caretaker, Sindha Maharaj.

"The attackers broke the statues of (Hindu deities) Radha, Hanuman, Parwati and Krishna, and took away the decorative gold ornaments," Maharaj said. "They also stormed my home and snatched the gold jewelry of my family, my daughters."

Maharaj and other Hindu leaders turned to the police, who registered a case against the cleric and eight other Muslims. But none of the suspects had been found as of Sunday, Hanif said.

The police officer said the case against the attackers was registered under Section 295-A of the blasphemy laws, which covers the "outraging of religious feelings." That section of the law can carry a fine or up to 10 years imprisonment, but, if the case were to proceed, it's unclear exactly what punishment would be imposed.

Court decisions in the past have often confused what penalties should be applied in blasphemy cases in Pakistan. And although many blasphemous acts are said to require the death penalty, Pakistan is not known to have executed anyone under the law. Still, many of the accused have been killed by extremists outside the courts.

Human rights activists say the blasphemy laws are too broad and vague, and that they often are used by people seeking to settle scores with rivals, or as a means of targeting Christians, Hindus and other members of minority religions. Pakistan has some 180 million people and is 95 percent Muslim.

Islamic conservatism, as well as extremism, is on the rise here, and even speaking out against the blasphemy laws can put people in danger. Two prominent politicians, including the sole Christian member of the federal Cabinet, were assassinated in 2011 for urging reform of the law.

Is He Relationship Material ? 3 Lessons I Learned From Computer Analysts

I am not a computer engineer but I have always been close to them, many members of my family and some friend work in fields related to computer science. How does my knowledge of the secrets of computer analysts' work relate to finding the correct man for a healthy, fulfilling relationship?

Detailed Requirement Analysis is essential

When computer experts start to develop software, they need to study the situation and come out with a set of detailed requirements the software has to fulfill.

Which is the lesson here? You must sit and write down what your desired man should have before you go out trying to find him. Many women would think this is a waste of time, but doing this has two clear benefits.

By writing down what you are looking for in a man helps to determine what exactly you are looking for. The same happens with software development, writing down the software requirements helps to find inconsistencies or missing things you need to know before starting or during the development.

Maybe you are looking for a man with some characteristics that are often incompatible in a single person. The second benefit of writing down the must have's for the man takes us to the next lesson.

Requirements need to be validated during development or testing phase

By having the list of must have's at hand, the woman will be able to determine if a man passes the list. The same happens with software development, where computer analysts need to have the list of requirements at hand to be sure that what they are constructing doesn't go against the requirements.

In addition, there are some characteristics that maybe are difficult to check in the first dates. That is why you need to have your list at hand to be testing if your man still is what you want.

In software development happens the same, when the software is tested, at the end of the development needs to be validated against the requirements.

Don't allow changes in the requirements without a detailed study of the impact

What sometimes happen in software development is that changes in requirements are introduced without a complete study of how this impacts in the software and the rest of the requirements.

This teaches us that changes in what we are looking for in a man should be analyzed. Perhaps you start to date with a man who passes almost all the must have's of the list but there are a few that not; you may be tempted to delete that items from the list.

You can do that, but before deleting those items, the list should be analyzed and studied again.

Following these secrets, if you are looking for serious relationship, you will be able to determine if your man is relationship material.

Nick Kristof Takes Social Good Gaming to the Next Level

Nick Kristof thinks social good needs a new marketing campaign.

At the 2012 Social Good Summit, The New York Times columnist and humanitarian spoke about how big businesses and products seem to have smart and successful marketing strategies, but important world issues like poverty and clean water never get the publicity and attention they deserve.

?People flinch at the idea of marketing for those [issues] because marketing sounds like something companies do,? Kristof said. ?But it?s so much more important to market about issues of life or death.?

Kristof?s frustration with the lack of widespread knowledge about important issues defended his other claim about humanitarian work ? that it?s not easy to make a change. ?There?s no silver bullet,? he said.

But Kristof managed to discern the secret weapon, of sorts, to impacting change: education. Mainly, educating women and girls, he said, adding that its not about quantity of education but quality.

?Women and girls are the leverage to change the world,? he said. ?The result is a virtuous cycle of change that benefits not just half the nation, but everyone.?

Simple efforts like iodizing salt in developing areas will dramatically increase the rates at which kids grow, learn and attend school, according to Kristof.

But it takes awareness and money to get the right people to take these steps, and Kristof felt that the best way to get out the word was though something unexpected and fun ? games.

So Kristof and partner Asi Burak, the co-president for Games for Change, developed the Half The Sky Movement that is creating a series of Facebook and mobile games that work to be both entertaining and educational, but mostly is a way to mobilize the vast gaming community on social networks ? approximately 300 million players each month ? to make a real difference.

SEE ALSO: When Social Gaming Meets Social Good

Like games such as Farmville, The Half Sky Movement games work by allowing players to unlock levels that make donations to various humanitarian organizations. Kristof said it was important for his team to not only ?create achievements for gamers but blur the line between game play and the real world.?

To that end, they are working with corporate partners like book publisher Pearson, which will put $250,000 towards getting ?real books into the hands of real kids,? Kristof announced, and Johnson & Johnson will foot the bill for fistula surgeries for women awaiting that procedure.

Games have yet to be exploited for their ability to create change in the way genres like music and movies have, Burak said. But if other genres can send those messages, his team felt that games should be no exception, that they should ?expand the boundaries.?

The Half the Sky Movement is also attempting to put games in the hands of those who need them the most ? in developing countries where mobile is more common than television. In those contexts, Kristof said, if a game about deworming pills can be made ?fun,? then they can prove extremely effective.

?It?s not about the number of people who play the game,? Kristoff said. ?It?s about the number of kids who get books for the first time; it?s the number of kids who get dewormed because of the mobile game ? because that ultimately is the impact we want to have.?

Do you think games have the power to create change beyond entertainment? Tell us why or why not in the comments below.

In 2006, MTVu released a flash game to highlight the struggles millions faced in the Darfur region of Sudan, while the country engaged in a bloody civil war. Darfur is Dying was created to illustrate the difficulty of living among modern genocide.

The game begins when the player selects a member of a Darfuri family living in a refugee camp. That player must then run several thousand meters to the water well and back, while hiding from trucks that contain janjaweed militia members looking to kidnap them on sight.

If kidnapped, you learn what happens to captured Darfuris. Then, the game asks you to pick another family member and retry the water run. Succeed and you are taken to another portion of the game: a top-down view of the refugee camp, which you must keep fed and protected.

The game prompted users to donate to humanitarian groups or contact representatives to encourage U.S. involvement. Although the crisis in Darfur is over, the game still exists online. MTV said that in its height, 1.2 million people around the globe played Darfur is Dying.

While Grumpy Goats resembles Angry Birds a little too much, this goat-chucking game also serves a noble purpose. The game's creators teamed up with World Vision, a humanitarian group helping impoverished families, to encourage gamers to give wisely. The game asks players to donate a goat to a family in need. The animal can offer food and income for several years.

The biggest irony of Phone Story is that you play on the type of smartphone the game denounces in the first place.

It was created by Molleindustira, an activist interactive group responsible for several games that focus on serious issues. It brings awareness to the labor practices it says go into manufacturing smartphones and other coveted gadgets.

The game takes the player through several gameplay vignettes, such as preventing suicides in Chinese factories or chucking iPhones at zombie-like consumers as they walk toward characters that resemble Apple Store employees.

The game was originally released for iPhone, but was banned from the iTunes store shortly after. However, it is still available for download on Android.

Molleindustira said it donated all the proceeds of the game to people injured in manufacturing plant accidents. You can also play for free online.

Survive125 simulates what it's like to live as a working mother in poverty, on only $1.25 a day. The game presents a variety of harrowing choices, like whether to send your daughter to a factory known for enslaving girls into prostitution rings. At the end of the game, you're invited to donate to charities that help similar women for 30 days.

WeTopia town-building Facebook game uses many of the freemium elements of popular social games to help charities. Players gain JoyPoints with every action, which they can use to help charities featured in the game. Players can learn from short videos embedded in game, and then donate earned or purchased currency to help that charity.

Sojo Studios, the game's creator, said it donates 50% of its profits to 20 non-profit organizations around the country, including profit made from advertisements sold around the game.

Richmond's first ?Slut Walk? brings up sexual assualt awareness ...

Posted on: 12:18 am, September 23, 2012, by Jake Burns and Megan Woo, updated on: 01:09am, September 23, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? To speak out against how sexual assault is viewed in today?s America, more than 170 people took to the streets today in Richmond?s first every ?Slut Walk.?? Their creed: ?Abolish the Blame: Bringing Awareness to Sexual Assault and Victim Blaming.?

Speaking through a loud speaker in front of dozens at Byrd Park, Sarah Boggs shared her story for the first time.

?I was raped by two boys in one night,? says Boggs to the crowd.? ?Hearing other people?s stories, telling them mine, it really helped a lot. ?It made me so much more comfortable telling my story.?

Saturday afternoon was Richmond?s first ever ?Slut Walk.?? After a march through the Fan District, survivors and supporters came together to talk about the main problem they see with how society views sexual assaults.

?The blame comes back on the victim, it should have nothing to do with what the victim is wearing, how old the victim is, what race the victim is,? says Kate Rush-Cook, who was a victim of sexual assault.

Organizers say the victim of sexual assault is often blamed for the attack because of the way the person dresses or acts.? It is a social stigma they want to change.

Jennifer Sublett, an assistant Commonwealth?s Attorney in Richmond, spoke at Saturday?s event.? She says sexual assault cases are the most difficult to prosecute.

?It?s always one person?s word against the other,? says Sublett.? ?It?s not about sexuality; it?s about vulnerability.?

Those in attendance brought signs to bring attention to the false idea that the way someone dresses makes them a target for sexual predators.

?Wearing a certain type of clothing isn?t going to stop it.? It isn?t going to stop a person,? says Dominique Lee, who is also a victim of sexual assault.

?I?ve heard people say that she?s going to be raped seeing a girl walk by.? People have to realize that that?s not okay,? says Boggs.

So to start changing this stigma, survivors stood by each other and shared their stories of pain as a sign of what they want to change.

?It?s not okay to blame the victim,? says Rush-Cook.

Although this was the first ?Slut Walk? in Richmond, it won?t be the last.? Organizers say they will continue to share their message by doing another Slut Walk next year.

To read more about the ?Slut Walk? movement internationally, visit Slut Walk Richmond?s website.

Suu Kyi visit a homecoming for many in Ind. city

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) ? Eight thousand miles separate southeast Asia from the American Midwest, but when Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi visits an Indiana city on Tuesday, it will be a kind of homecoming.

Fort Wayne, home to one of the United States' largest Burmese populations, has become an unlikely base for opposition to the country's former military regime.

Here, Suu Kyi's followers meet regularly, criticizing what's happening in their homeland through Voice of America broadcasts and YouTube videos, lobbying Congress for continued economic sanctions and raising money for the opposition in Myanmar, also known as Burma.

"They cannot talk in there, so we talk for them here," said Thiha Ba Kyi, 57, a former dentist who earned an MBA after coming to the U.S. in 1994 and now hosts a weekly Burmese-language talk show on local television. "We are very staunch and very outspoken. ... I believe that's why Suu Kyi come here."

The visit by the 67-year-old Nobel laureate, who spent 15 years under house arrest for opposing military rule, marks the zenith of a two-decade influx of Burmese refugees that has brought a new global awareness to the city of 256,000 people two hours north of Indianapolis.

Since 1991, when a single Burmese refugee resettled here, thousands more have followed, many of them relocating under a federal program after years in refugee camps in Thailand. They join other political refugees from a host of countries who have made the city a second home since the fall of Saigon in 1975, thanks largely to the help of Catholic Charities.

The 2010 census found 3,800 Burmese in Allen County, where Fort Wayne is located, but Fred Gilbert, a retired welfare worker who now runs a website designed to help immigrants adjust to American life, says the number may be actually be a few thousand higher because some Burmese identify themselves by ethnic origin rather than nationality.

Many of those residents plan to turn out when Suu Kyi speaks to a crowd expected to number more than 7,000 Tuesday at Memorial Coliseum. The visit is part of a 17-day trip to the U.S. during which she has met with President Barack Obama and received the Congressional Gold Medal.

Signs welcoming her have shown up throughout the city. Local students gathered recently to make flags depicting the fighting peacock that appears on the flag of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party.

"She is the hope for the people," said Ba Kyi, who now works for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and helps the Burmese opposition in exile. "She can bring democracy again in Burma."

For many of the city's Burmese residents, Suu Kyi's visit will be the first tangible connection in years, even decades, with the homeland some hope to return to one day.

Many, like Ba Kyi, left behind careers when they fled their homeland and learned new skills to get a job. U Tun Oo, who chairs the local welcoming committee for Suu Kyi's visit, was elected to parliament in the 1990 election won by Suu Kyi's party that was nullified by the military regime and served as finance minister for the elected government in exile.

"I'm finance minister in the jungle," he said with a laugh. "Jungle minister."

Now Tun Oo, who was a construction engineer in Asia, works in a Fort Wayne factory. When he's not working, he heads the local branch of Suu Kyi's party.

"We see people who were university professors and members of parliament who are very accomplished who are doing all kinds of work," said Tom Lewandowski, president of the AFL-CIO's are labor council. "They'll do what it takes to get by."

Refugees qualify for federal government assistance, but Meghan Menchhofer, a staffer at the Burmese Advocacy Center, said while many newcomers rely on food stamps, only a handful accept cash welfare. The center, which is funded by federal grants and private donations, helps refugees find jobs and homes and navigate issues from laws and customs to getting a driver's license.

"It was different. Vastly different. I knew very little English," said May Ayar Oo, 26, who came to the U.S. at age 16. She graduated in the top five in her high school class and now works as an engineer while attending graduate school.

Patrick Proctor, a member of the board of directors at the Burmese Advocacy Center, said some people in Fort Wayne harbor a negative stereotype of the Burmese who live there. About two years ago, some of that prejudice came to light when a worker at a coin-operated laundry posted a sign barring Burmese "for sanitary reasons," apparently a reference to some people's habit of spitting out the residue from chewing betel nuts.

But many of the city's Burmese seem to have found their way. Burmese-run businesses have popped up across the city, and both the valedictorian and salutatorian at a local high school this year were Burmese.

Former Buddhist monk Nai Sike, 48, and his wife operate a Burmese grocery, one of several in town.

Sike said he would like to stay in the United States because of his business, but he might go back to visit Myanmar. Like the other Indiana Burmese, he is excited about Suu Kyi's visit.

"It's good she's coming here, because of democracy," he said through a translator.

Those attending Tuesday's speech will be eager to hear Suu Kyi's views on sanctions toward Myanmar. Since her release in 2010, she has joined hands with members of the former ruling junta that detained her to push ahead with political reform. She is under pressure from Myanmar President Thien Sein's government to press the U.S. to remove the restrictions.

Ba Kyi wants to be a part of the change Suu Kyi is expected to bring. He said he wants to teach his people, who have no experience of freedom, what democracy is about.

"I would like to move back," he said. "Hopefully, they'll need educated people who have experience in a democratic country."

Kansas volleyball sweeps Texas Tech in Big 12 opener

? Kansas University?s volleyball team opened its Big 12 Conference season with a sweep of Texas Tech, 25-16, 25-16, 25-15, on the road Saturday at United Spirit Arena.

In the match, the Jayhawks (13-2 overall, 1-0 Big 12) collected 10 more kills and 12 more blocks than the Red Raiders and finished with a hitting percentage of .371, KU?s highest mark in over a year.

?We had great balance tonight,? coach Ray Bechard said. ?When you have just seven errors in a three-set match on the road against a Big 12 team, you?re doing a lot of things right. Erin (McNorton) moved the ball around really well tonight, and I was very happy with Cathy (Carmichael). Her nine kills and no errors is what we need out of her.?

Junior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoc led KU with 11 kills and seven blocks.

Senior middle blocker Tayler Tolefree and freshman outside hitter Tiana Dockery both chipped in six blocks on a night when KU had 14 rejections to Tech?s two.

Tolefree also led the team with a .583 efficiency mark.

Kansas will return home to host No. 19 Iowa State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ruth Skilbeck: 'Histories of Motherhood' Conference Report

Today I returned from a very inspiring and stimulating conference in Canada, the international conference on Mothers and History: Histories of Motherhood, hosted by the world leading research centre Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement (MIRCI) founded and directed by Professor Andrea O'Reilly and based at York University in Toronto. I gave a paper and presentation on my current and ongoing creative writing and cultural studies research into impacts of adoption and its aftermath on families in Australia, based on my own family history and experiences that I have been researching since before my mother passed away, in 2008.

I presented my paper in a session on ?the conference theme Empowering Mothers.

Remembering Australia's Forgotten Mothers- Identity and Colonial History. My paper began to tell my personal story written as grief and as healing, of how I began to find a secret hidden grandmother in my family, starting by briefly outlining the historical context of the ?Stolen Generations? in Australia in the 20th century- an era when possibly 100 000s of children mainly but not only of Aboriginal and Torres Strait descent were forcibly removed from their families and brought up as wards of state or adopted. In my paper I tell the story of how I began to find out about my hidden grandmother, and how in the process I switched roles as an art writer and journalist to writing about myself and my own family experiences of hidden history. At the time of writing the paper I had not discovered my mother?s family. The paper interweaves creative writing, blog entries (from this blog), extract from a novel-in-progress I am writing, and my digital photographs (on this blog).

?I share my story as grief and as healing. This is my personal story and the views I express about the history and culture in twentieth century Australia, and the events I recount in relation to my mother?s life, are seen-and-felt through the prism of grieving and in the process of healing through recovery of family memory and identity, my mother?s family; ?lost? in colonial history.? These are not ?easy? views to express in the open space of the public sphere (and such views are probably more usually repressed or kept to oneself or within a family) yet I am taking this communicative action in the conscious hope that through expression of grief in the public sphere of a knowledge community, in the creative process of writing and sharing this story healing may come; that it will be a process of personal and cultural catharsis, the kind of emotional release, and expression, that comes from playing or listening to music, and dancing? this time to a mourning song.? More deeply, I am driven to write of this journey from an ?unspeakable? place (Kristeva 1981), where words are rhythms, of a psychic chain, a primal memory of a heart beat, and where the interplay of word and hand and mind and screen, the writing machine, replaces that originary matrixical machine; it is something I am compelled to do, I cannot not write this story. Winnicott theorized the ?transitional object? that a child uses to replace ?the absent mother?.? (Winnicott 1974). Can self made art objects and works of writing fulfill this function, in the process of the creation and play of writing art? For some, I reflect, self-based writing becomes or re-creates its own transitional object.??.

?Why I chose to tell my story is as part of the process of grief and healing, bearing witness. On reflection, it is using emotionalism as a strategy of communicative action in the public sphere (Habermass 1984): To not be forgotten??? to not forget To speak out against the night???????? of silence and?? sadness???? (Skilbeck 2012). The paper was well received. In the audience were several delegates from Australian universities, and my research met with strong words of support. ?I am saddened but thrilled that you are doing this [pursuing this research]?, was one comment of support from a delegate who works for Queensland Health. My paper was part of a panel entitled Empowering Mothers, chaired by Dr Fiona Joy Green, Chair of the Women's and Gender Studies Department, University of Winnipeg. The other panelists were Wanda Thomas Bernard and Claudine Bonner, Dalhousie University presenting on "An Ethic of Protection and Care: African Nova Scotian Mothers".? They discussed their research project exploring the ?lived experiences of African Nova Scotian women from three long-standing communities? through their stories, and oral histories their story-tellers ?spoke of their mothers in community roles?? mothering not just their own children, but their communities... In these roles they also serve as role models as well?. The picture that emerges in their talk is of close knit and caring communities kept together, so that despite relatives and friends sometimes having to leave the community and country, the community is?kept together by those who take on the role of ?mothers?.

This closely knit community of survival juxtaposed ?the history in my own paper of the ?stolen generations? in 20th century Australia, when at least 100 000? babies and children were taken from mothers under a white Australia policy of assimilation, yet there are threads of shared strength and these come from the mothers in the community again, in my paper I quoted Aunty Shirley, Australian Aboriginal activist, speaking at a rally in 2007, where she speaks out for the mothers who had the pain of having their babies taken from them, but who still endure, as the backbone of the country (Skilbeck 2007). ?

?

In other sessions, it was moving to hear the accounts and analyses of the indigenous women and mothers from Canada and North America who spoke of the pain of the processes of assimilation that paralleled colonial assimilation policies in Australia, and caused much heartbreak and sorrow. Media representation of mothers in N. America, was discussed and it seems there is the added trauma and layers of social difficulty of the class system where single mothers and indigenous mothers are pushed down in class, and face great oppression. ?On hearing about this I initially thought that it was better in Australia as we do not hear about single mothers, or indigenous mothers described in such a ?(class based) way in the media. Then I rethought this, the problem in Australia is that so little is reported in the mainstream media at all about the problems facing single mothers and indigenous mothers- like so much in Australia historically, when these were things that were not talked about.?More needs to be said across the media. ?One aspect that does seem to be worse and having a harrowing impact on mothers is the US health system which is private, and unaffordable for so many; homelessness and losing houses was also brought up, as a very real and ongoing part of the difficulties mothers face following the mass US home repossession of the global financial crisis. A very different perspective came from Sweden.? It was interesting to hear about the different experiences of mothers and parents rights in Sweden where the state grants a maternity or paternity grant of over a year to be taken by either parent, and the positive benefits of this that are appreciated by citizens.

As well as presenting a paper, I chaired an opening session, on the theme of Representing Mothers.? The conference was a diverse, thought provoking, three days of papers and presentations by a wide range of feminist motherhood studies academics, artists, activists and advocates from around the world, convened by Professor Andrea O?Reilly pioneer of matricentric feminist theory and practice, who has worked in the field for three decades. Overarching ideas interlacing the ?main conference themes of the new 21st century motherhood movement were that: mothers need a feminism of our own (like a room of our own); that motherhood is the unfinished face of feminism; and that racially, culturally, transnationally diverse matricentric feminism is the new face of feminism. Under this umbrella were a variety of research papers exploring many aspects of motherhood from feminist perspectives: from longitudinal studies of what feminism means to daughters of feminist mothers, to first person artist projects, to cultural and medical histories and media representations of motherhood, childcare and adoption, and histories of indigenous motherhood in colonial contexts. Delegates came from universities around the world. At least five of the conference delegates were from Australia including Dr Marie Porter (founding president of Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement- Australia [MIRCI-A, and Honoury Senior ?Research Fellow in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland ), Dr Jennifer ?Jones (Queensland Health) and London-born, Adelaide contemporary artist Simone Kennedy, who is doing a PhD in art and theory on the absent mother, ?at the University of South Australia. As with the best conferences, communication and exchange happens in the margins as well as the mainstream presentations. I had ?interesting and fruitful conversations and exchanges of ideas, information and perceptions in a number of talks, including over dinner with Simone Kennedy; finding that not only were we both born in London, brought up in England, and moved to Australia at the same age, but that we also each for years had worked with a persistent symbolic motif of dissociation- of absence and the absent mother (Simone) and fugue (myself) in art/creative writing and critical research. ?Beginning around 1998, my years of ?fugue? research (which in effect ended ten years later when my mother passed away): ?was a research into the musical meaning and psychological meanings of fugue in writing as creative art (and began with my writing a fugue novel for my MA), researched in many ways and applications the psychological meaning of fugue as loss of awareness of identity. I wrote novels using this idea, and playing with the musical aspects of fugue, as well as art theory, in interpretations of polyphony and affect.? Now it is impossible not to see the unconscious and unintentional aspects that I wrote about as fugal, were reflexively, performatively, writing my own unconsciousness and family trauma. The loss of awareness of identity that I wrote of was my own, and of all the other countless thousands of people who, like us, had been ?white lied? to or denied knowledge of their families, heritage and relatives.? (Skilbeck, 2012). The MIRCI research centre hosts an annual conference. It publishes a quarterly journal, the Journal of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement (JMI),?it is also home to Demeter Press, the world's first feminist motherhood studies press, there was a publisher stand of latest journals, books and the back lists. The opportunity to attend?the conference supported my research, which has benefited from this exposure and public scholarly communication, and provided much food for thought for my ongoing research in this interdisciplinary field. My reworked research paper, is being published in the next issue of JMI with the title ?Remembering Australia?s Forgotten Mothers: Reclaiming Lost Identity in Colonial History.? ?Ruth Skilbeck, 22/9/2012

ICC T20 World Cup: South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs

HAMBANTOTA (SRI LANKA): South Africa beat hosts Sri Lanka by 32 runs in a rain-affected match that was truncated to seven-overs-a-side at the Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing 79, Sri Lanka managed 46 for five in seven overs.

Rain played spoilsport but failed to dampened the spirit of the 34,000 spectators, who had turned up for the first Twenty20 international between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The start of the match was delayed by two-and-a-half-hours and when rain stopped only seven overs per side were possible.

Sri Lanka won the toss and skipper Mahela Jayawardene decided to bowl first. Nuwan Kulasekara struck in the very first over to get rid of the dangerous Richard Levi with Dilshan Munaweera taking one of the best catches in the tournament so far.

But it was the captain's knock of 15-ball 30 by AB de Villiers that took away the match from Sri Lankans. Hashim Amla (16), Faf du Plessis (13) and Jean Paul Duminy (13 nout out) also came up with valuable runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Munaweera and Kumar Sangakkara were the only two batsmen, who got to double figures scoring identical 13.

Both teams have moved into the Super Eight Stage.
