Tired of Kardashians? Resistance appears futile

By Pamela Sitt, TODAY.com contributor

We?re sorry to have to break this to you, but 2012 is not the year of the Dragon. It?s the year of the Kardashian.

Lucy Nicholson / Reuters file

"Should I tweet a picture of this licorice bow I made?" Kim Kardashian and her sister Khloe at an NBA game earlier this month.

This might be the year that the Kardashians break us. There are too many of them. They?re relentless. And they keep breeding. Kourtney?s on a beach in Mexico as we speak, flaunting her baby bump in a turquoise bikini.

Is resistance futile?

You would think that after the embarrassment of Kim Kardashian?s 72-day marriage -- culminating in a dramatic, and certainly biased, retelling of events?in Sunday?s ?Kourtney and Kim Take New York? finale -- the most famous of the sisters would want to lay low for a while.

You would think.

But a girl can?t even watch ?The Bachelor? on a Monday night without getting assaulted by a preview for the ABC sitcom ?Last Man Standing,? guest-starring ... Kim Kardashian!

While guest-hosting ?Live with Kelly? last week, Kim told Kelly Ripa that she fled to her mom?s house with only pajamas and two pairs of sweatpants after her divorce for a self-imposed media hiatus. But I don?t recall a period in the recent past when we didn?t hear about Kim Kardashian. Do you?

On Monday, hours after E! showed her having a tearful meltdown because she didn?t want her husband to move his stuff into her house (prompting Scott Disick to ask, ?You do realize you?re married, right??), Kim cheerfully tweeted a pictureof herself and her sisters posing topless in Kardashian Kollection blue jeans.

Insert overexposure joke here. (Also, when did Scott Disick become the voice of reason in the Kardashian universe?)

On Tuesday, Kim tweeted (to her 12.8 million followers, shame on all of you) a picture of her new hair color: ?You like??

It appears that we do. Enough people seem to like Kim & Co. to keep them relevant.?Almost 5 million viewers tuned in to the ?Kourtney and Kim? finale, so you can be sure that E! has already signed a television contract with Kourtney?s unborn baby.

Is it too late to make a collective New Year?s resolution?

It is?

Well, then. ?Khloe and Lamar? is right around the corner.

Do you follow the Kardashians on Twitter or watch their shows on TV? Defend yourself over on Facebook!

Quantum speed limits within reach, present moves ever closer to future

Got your wire-rimmed spectacles on? Had a full night's rest? Eager to get those synapses firing? Here's hoping, because Marc Cheneau and co. are doing everything they can to stretch the sheer meaning of quantum understanding. The aforesaid scientists recently published an article that details a method for measuring quantum particle interaction in a way that has previously been considered impossible. Put simply (or, as simply as possible), the famed Lieb-Robinson bound was "quantified experimentally for the first time, using a real quantum gas." The techobabble rolls on quite severely from there, but the key here is realize just how much of an impact this has on the study of quantum entanglement, and in turn, quantum computing. For those interested in seeing what lives in a world beyond silicon, dig into the links below. You may never escape, though -- just sayin'.

Investors face more than 70 pct loss in Greek deal (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Investors participating in a deal to slash Greece's massive debt would face an overall loss on their bond holdings of more than 70 percent, a person involved in with the negotiations said early Tuesday.

European leaders at a summit in Brussels said a final debt deal could be signed off in the coming days, together with a second multibillion-euro bailout package designed to save the country from a potentially disastrous bankruptcy.

Athens and representatives of investors holding Greek government bonds over the weekend came close to a final agreement designed to bring Greece's debt down to a more manageable level. Without a restructuring, those debts would swell to around double the country's economic output by the end of the year.

If the agreement works as planned, it will help Greece remain solvent and help Europe avoid a blow to its already weakened financial system, even though banks and other bond investors will have to accept big losses.

The person involved in the talks said Monday that the more-than 70 percent loss was the result of cutting the bonds' face value in half, reducing the average interest rate to between 3.5 per cent and 4 percent and pushing repayment of the bonds 30 years into the future. A second person briefed on the talks confirmed that the loss on the so-called net present value of the bonds would be around 70 percent.

Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential.

The deal, which would reduce the country's debt by about euro100 billion ($131.1 billion) and save it billions of euros in interest payments, needs to be completed quickly. Greece runs the risk of a disorderly default on March 20, when it faces a euro14.5 billion bond repayment it cannot afford without additional help.

Many investors ? banks, insurance companies and hedge funds ? who hold Greek bonds also hold debt from other countries that use the euro, which could lose value if there is a fully fledged Greek default. This is the scenario the eurozone fears most and why the currency union hopes investors will voluntarily accept a partial loss on their Greek bonds.

The agreement taking shape is a key step before Greece can get a second, euro130 billion bailout. The country has been surviving since May 2010 on an initial euro110 billion ($144.21 billion) package of rescue loans from other countries using the euro and the International Monetary Fund.

Even a deal is inked, there is no guarantee that Greece won't need more help.

"It's too early now to say whether we will need some extra public funding," Greek prime minister Lucas Papademos said after a meeting with other top European officials in Brussels early Tuesday. "Our goal is to avert such an alternative."

More public sector support could either mean more bailout loans ? something that the eurozone is reluctant to commit to ? or a deal with the European Central Bank to also give Greece a break on its debt.

The ECB holds some euro55 billion in Greek government bonds, which it purchased at around euro40 billion in the early days of the debt crisis, according to analyst estimates. One option would be to allow Greece to buy back those bonds at the price the ECB paid to buy them, slicing another euro15 billion or so off what the country owes. However, so far the ECB has ruled out participating in any debt restructuring.

On top of restructuring its debt with private investors, Greece must also take other steps to secure further aid. It must cut its deficit and boost the competitiveness of its economy through layoffs of public sector workers and the sale of several state companies, among other moves.

Papademos said the so-called troika of debt inspectors ? the European Commission, the ECB and the IMF ? were calling for further spending cuts to meet budget targets and agreements to lower labor costs.

But Greece's partners in the eurozone have grown frustrated with the country's slow implementation of austerity measures and economic reforms promised almost two years ago. In recent days, they have discussed ways of monitoring Athens' efforts even more closely, including giving the European Commission, the power to block spending decisions that threaten the country's ability to repay its debts.

Earlier Monday, Greek lenders Eurobank and Alpha Bank said a planned merger to create the country's largest bank by assets could be put on hold because of the negotiations over the bond swap.

The banks said that "an accurate timeline cannot be given" to complete the deal announced last August because of the negotiations.

Greece's finance ministry expressed surprise at the announcement, arguing that the negotiations had produced "nothing new or different" to factors already taken into account by both banks.

Demi Moore's collapse: What exactly is a 'whip-it'? (The Week)

New York ? Paramedics report the actress and mother of three lost consciousness after getting high on nitrous oxide ? a cheap thrill popular among teenagers

Demi Moore was recently released from a Los Angeles hospital following what's been reported as a bender during which the Charlie's Angels actress allegedly did "whip-its," or inhaled nitrous oxide, eventually losing consciousness. The high-profile 49-year-old has been a popular tabloid target in the wake of a messy split with longtime partner Ashton Kutcher. What exactly is a "whip-it" and how dangerous are they?

What is a whip-it?
It's a "perennially popular" way to get high by inhaling nitrous oxide,?says The Periscope Post. Users typically use the nitrous oxide canisters that are "used to give store-bought whipped cream its fluff"; hence the name "whip-it." These canisters can be ordered online or bought in kitchen- or restaurant-supply stores. Alternatively, users can inhale nitrous oxide from balloons or bags. "If you were a teenager in the mid-?90s and you were bored, you may have done them."

SEE ALSO: 'Napoleonland': France's 'elaborate' new amusement park?

?

What does it do?
You may know nitrous oxide by its more familiar alias: laughing gas. The substance is "usually used by dentists prior to administering Novocaine injections or performing dental procedures," and can result in "euphoric, dissociated, and out-of-body" experiences for people who inhale it, says Test Country. Or, as?one anonymous source tells the Guardian: "you get very, very dizzy, light headed and giggly. It lasts about 30 seconds, you stand up and fall down." The high may be brief,?says Jane E. Allen at?ABC News, but it's also "relatively intense."

Is it legal??
Technically, yes. Like glue, paint, or VCR cleaners, nitrous oxide is available in most supply aisles, including Wal-Mart's. It's "easily accessible, relatively inexpensive, and generally legal," notes Allen, though most states bar sale of the substance to minors.

?

How dangerous is it?
The drug works by depriving the brain of oxygen, and evidence suggests that abuse can leave "dark holes" where brain cells have been destroyed, notes CBS News. In terms of side effects, whip-its can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and vitamin B-12 deficiency, which can result in numbness in the fingers and toes. More severe consequences include lung collapse, blood vessel hemorrhage in the lungs, heart attack, seizure, and coma. If that fails to paint a sufficiently vivid cautionary tale, remember this,?says the Guardian:?"it kills rats."

PFT: Irsay won't talk about Manning this week

BGEatSBAP

The Patriots have put together a roster full of guys that no one else wanted. It?s a motley crew and that seems to suit this organization best.

Sure, Tom Brady is protected by an offensive line with a good pedigree. The defense is led by first round picks Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork.

But overall this is one of the most random rosters in the league.?18 undrafted free agents dot the 53-man roster, including?eight starters.

More than one-third of the Patriots roster was undrafted.?The Patriots also have eleven more players that were taken in the fifth round or later in the draft. ?Less than half of the team was drafted in the first four rounds. 12 Patriots were signed ?off the street? or during training camp.

Essentially, the Patriots have a roster of misfits. We think that?s been a big part of their success this year. It?s a roster that Belichick embraces, and one that falls in line with the ?Patriot Way.?

?I tell the team that I don?t care how you got here, it?s what you do when you get here. It doesn?t matter if you were drafted in the second round, the fifth round, or not drafted at all,? Belichick said in response to a question from PFT in Indianapolis.

A lot of teams say that to their players, but most squads are more sentimental about hanging on to past mistakes. The Patriots are far from perfect in personnel, but they do a better job than most of self scouting.

?Players ask me before the season, if we sign them as a free agent or if we draft them, ?What do you want my role to be?? Whatever you make it, I don?t know,? Belichick said. ?If you play good, you will have a big role, if you don?t play very well, then someone else will have a bigger role than you will.?

Belichick says he looks for undrafted players that are dependable and work hard. That sounds obvious, but it?s clear the Patriots genuinely value these skills more than raw talent. Their running back position ? led by two undrafted players BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead ? is a great example of the Patriots finding diamonds in the rough and knowing how to use them.

?There?s a goal that they have in mind with the guys that they bring in, and they try to bring in guys that they think will buy into that,? special teams ace and fifth-round pick Matthew Slater said. ?You kind of have that sense of urgency from the day you come into the league knowing that things are not going to be easy for you.?

?With [Belichick], you know the best players are going to play. No matter where you are taken or what the deal is or anything else, ?the best players are going to be out there. If you prove yourself, there?s no politics about it,? Wes Welker said.

That?s why Belichick is comfortable enough to bench a $6 million receiver (Chad Ochocinco), release a free agent bust (Albert Haynesworth), or even trade a future Hall of Famer (Randy Moss) in the middle of the season.

?You?ve got to kind of come in and be willing to do dirty work; whatever it takes to stick around,? Slater said. ?I think a lot of guys on this team have that mentality, and that?s why we?ve had the success that we?ve had.?

This may not be the most talented Patriots team of the last decade, but it?s obvious Belichick loves to coach this group.

It?s his kind of team.

Bucks keep Lakers' road woes going with 100-89 win (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Drew Gooden scored 23 points and the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks made sure the Lakers' road struggles continued, beating Los Angeles 100-89 on Saturday night.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 for the Lakers, who are 1-7 on the road this season.

Ersan Ilyasova and Mike Dunleavy added 15 points each for the Bucks, who managed to beat the Lakers without two of their best players.

Already scrambling to compensate for the long-term absence of injured center Andrew Bogut, the Bucks found themselves without guard/forward Stephen Jackson on Saturday because of an NBA suspension.

Bryant made six free throws to break Jerry West's franchise record for free throws made. Coming into Saturday's game, Bryant needed three makes to tie West's mark of 7,160.

Bryant also came closer to becoming the Lakers' career leader in field goals made. He was 10 of 21 from the floor Saturday, leaving him three short of the 13 field goals he needed to tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's franchise record of 9,935 field goals made.

Even without Bogut and Jackson, the Bucks were in control most of the way. Ilyasova hit a jumper at the horn to end the third quarter, and the Bucks took an 80-73 lead into the fourth.

The Bucks led 85-76 after an inside score from Ilyasova with just under eight minutes left, but Bryant scored five straight points to cut the lead to four.

But Luc Richard Mbah a Moute hit a jumper, then Gooden scored on a turnaround hook shot and hit a pair of free throws to run the lead back to 91-81.

Andrew Bynum scored inside, but Dunleavy hit a long jumper to give the Bucks a 93-83 lead with just over two minutes left.

After Bryant made a pair of free throws, Dunleavy drilled a 3-pointer to put the game away with 1:24 left.

The Bucks managed the beat the Lakers without Jackson, whose suspension was announced a few hours before the game.

The NBA suspended Jackson one game for verbal abuse of a game official and failure to leave the court in a timely manner at the end of the Bucks' 107-100 loss at Chicago on Friday night.

It's another rough moment for Jackson, who was benched by coach Scott Skiles in the Bucks' Jan. 20 game at the New York Knicks.

Bogut, meanwhile, fractured his left ankle in Wednesday's game at Houston and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks ? a crushing blow for Milwaukee.

Without Bogut, the undersized Bucks faced a tough test from the Lakers' pair of 7-footers: Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

But they held their ground on defense early on, taking a 51-43 lead at halftime. The Bucks forced the Lakers into 10 turnovers in the first half, and limited Gasol to six points on 3 for 10 shooting.

Gasol finished the game with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but was 6 for 18 from the floor.

Lakers rookie guard Andrew Goudelock scored 13 points despite being hospitalized for dehydration overnight. Goudelock was coming off his best performance of the year, having scored a career-high 14 points against the Clippers on Wednesday.

Lambert postpones US show after friend's death

(AP) ? Miranda Lambert has rescheduled her Friday concert in Tallahassee, Florida, to attend the funeral of a close friend.

A news release Sunday says Lambert's childhood friend Mark "Tex" Adams was killed in a traffic accident in Florida this week. He was sideswiped by a vehicle after he had pulled over to help another driver. It's the second loss of a close friend in recent weeks for Lambert, whose father-in-law, Dick Shelton, died Jan. 17.

Lambert said in a tweet Thursday: "I have lost a friend I've had since 3rd grade today in a tragic accident. When will this pain end. Please pray for peace."

Lambert's "On Fire" tour will now stop in Tallahassee on May 17.

(AP) ? Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.

China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.

The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.

In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.

Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Movement attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement are a guerrilla force that has fought against Sudan's regime. Its members hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

Ron Paul, Mitt Romney Leading On Facebook Ahead Of Florida Primary

Screen Shot 2012-01-27 at 5.40.06 PMThe Republican presidential candidacy is still far from decided, based on the split primaries and mixed polls so far. So here's another source for trying to figure who's really pulling ahead -- the number of new Facebook fans that each candidate is getting, according to the Inside Facebook Election Tracker. Mitt Romney is finally making some strong gains this month, in contrast to his Facebook performance over December. By "strong gains" I mean he's been attracting a roughly similar number of fans to Ron Paul, the candidate who normally dominates on the web (and the clear leader last month). The two have fought for the daily lead for most of January, except for when Rick Santorum surged around his Iowa primary win on the 3rd.

Acupuncture May Boost Pregnancy Success Rates (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Jan. 27 (HealthDay News) -- When a couple is trying to have a baby and can't, it can be emotionally and financially draining. But help may be available in an unexpected form: acupuncture.

Medical experts believe that this ancient therapy from China, which involves placing numerous thin needles at certain points in the body, can help improve fertility in both men and women.

"Acupuncture has been around for almost 3,000 years. It's safe and there are no bad side effects from it," explained Dr. Lisa Lilienfield, a family practice and pain management specialist at the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Va. "It may not be the only thing that is done in isolation to treat infertility, but it helps get the body primed and maximizes the potential effects of fertility treatments."

Dr. Jamie Grifo, director of the New York University Fertility Center and director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said that "it's not a panacea, but acupuncture does help some patients have better success."

"It's one non-traditional modality to help manage the stress of infertility, and it does improve pregnancy rates and quality of life in some people," he said.

In addition to relieving stress, Lilienfield said that acupuncture can help increase a woman's fertility by improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. This improved blood flow can help thicken the lining of the uterus, increasing the chances of conception.

It may also help correct problems with the body's neuroendocrine system. Acupuncture can help activate the brain to release hormones that will stimulate the ovaries, adrenal glands and other organs that are involved in reproduction, according to Lilienfield. Acupuncture's effect on the neuroendocrine system may also help infertile men by stimulating sperm production, she said.

Studies that have been done on acupuncture and fertility have had mixed results, with some showing benefits and others showing none. Grifo said the differing results may have something to do with the design of the studies. Two areas that appear to be more consistently helped by acupuncture treatments are in vitro fertilization and women who are infertile due to polycystic ovary syndrome.

Two studies -- one in Acupuncture in Medicine and the other in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation -- found a benefit when acupuncture was used on the day an embryo was transferred into a woman's uterus.

The study from the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation also found that women with polycystic ovary syndrome and men who had infertility issues with no known cause also benefitted from acupuncture.

The actual treatment session involves placing very thin needles at specific points in the body. In Chinese medicine, these points are believed to be areas where a person's "qi" (pronounced chee), or life force, is blocked, according to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In Western medicine, it's believed that the needle placement may release the body's natural painkillers.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain, such as back pain, headache and menstrual cramps, according to the center.

Lilienfield said that acupuncture treatment costs vary, depending on where someone lives and the training of the practitioner. In her center, a treatment costs about $135, and most people receive six to eight treatments for infertility, she said. Insurance reimbursement also varies, she noted, though many insurance companies will pay for acupuncture.

In general, someone younger than 35 is often advised to try to get pregnant for about a year before seeking treatment for infertility. "But, if you're anxious to get going, six months is a reasonable time to wait," Lilienfield said. And women older than 35 probably shouldn't wait more than six months, she added.

Grifo said he doesn't favor waiting that long to seek treatment. "If you are trying to get pregnant and struggling with it, you don't need to wait a year," he said. "And, if you're over 35, don't wait six months to get worked up if it's causing you distress."

Obama's 'State of the Campaign' Speech (ContributorNetwork)

President Obama gave his third State of the Union speech Tuesday, which was nothing more than a thinly veiled campaign speech.

The president began by reminding us that Osama bin Laden was killed under his watch.

When bin Laden was killed in a military raid, Obama took most of the credit in his speech. This turned out to be untrue, as reported on Yahoo! and many other media outlets. Like many of Obama's "triumphs," his involvement was greatly exaggerated.

This lead into his usual collectivism clap-trap.

"They're not consumed with personal ambition," Obama read aloud from teleprompters. " They work together."

Obama also touted job growth, when the truth is that they are counting less people in order to keep the unemployment percentage artificially low, as also reported on Yahoo!.

Obama stated, "Today, for the first time in 15 years, Master Lock's unionized plant in Milwaukee is running at full capacity." This, no doubt, is due to the ridiculously high number of foreclosures. The banks padlock the doors on these houses upon eviction.

Regarding foreclosures, Obama condemned banks for doing what Democrats mandated that they do. Through the Community Reinvestment Acts passed under the Carter and Clinton Administrations and strong-arming by the likes of Barney Frank, advocating on behalf of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Forbes Magazine wrote an excellent article exposing the truth behind the "housing bubble."

During the speech, Obama calls for reduced spending and tax cuts, then advocates for raising taxes and much more spending.

Obama calls for doubling capital gains taxes, which will be detrimental.

This, in turn, will hurt the middle class Obama pretends to care about. Those with retirement funds such as 401k's and 457 plans, based on stock investments, would also be subject to higher tax rates which would significantly cut into their retirement funding.

Additionally, doubling the capital gains tax would deter investment in up-and-coming businesses which create jobs. Established corporations also use investment funding for projects which allow for job retention. A reduction in investors would also negatively affect the retirement plans of the middle class by significantly decreasing their value.

The millionaires and billionaires Obama is trying to make us all hate, through farcical concepts such as the "Buffet Rule," can afford to pull all of their investments and live off of what they own if it gets to that point, causing the market to crash.

Some of the spending Obama called for is increased government "investments" in green energy companies, like Solyndra, and the creation of yet more bureaucracies. He announced the creation of the Trade Enforcement Unit " that will be charged with investigating unfair trading practices in countries like China." Another new bureaucracy he announced is the Financial Crimes Unit, aimed at investigating the banks for doing what the government made them do.

The most hypocritical part of Obama's speech was his call for increased domestic energy production and American jobs after he killed the Keystone XL pipeline project which would have created tens of thousands of jobs.

RIM?s New CEO Backtracks: ?There Is A Lot Of Change?

ThorstenHeinsOn Monday of this week, RIM's new CEO made a statement that set off a bomb on the blogosphere, and I'm not sure he understood its repercussions at the time. "I don't think any drastic change is needed." If you've been paying attention to RIM and its numbers, you know that what the company desperately needs is change. Sales are declining, platform market share is dwindling, and the BlackBerry brand, to a large extent, has lost the power it once had behind it. So in a recent interview with CrackBerry, Heins made sure to clarify exactly what he meant by "no drastic change is needed."

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice

Windows 8 to limit custom look to themes

A seemingly minor decision for Windows 8 in the post-developer preview versions has shown an about-face by Microsoft in its approach to design. During new demos on Thursday to TechRadar, Windows 8 communications lead Chris Flores explained that users wouldn't be allowed to change the background of the main Metro screen to their own photo. Scaling was an issue, but Microsoft had also decided that the home screen tiles would cover it up too much, defeating the point of a custom image.

In its place, Microsoft is offering a mix of basic styles with color themes, each of which has a coordinating set of hues for the trim. The login screen will still allow a custom photo, much like Windows Phone.

The reduced choice is unusual for Microsoft and shows the emphases on consistent style, visibility, and usability in the new OS. Apple has often been criticized for not allowing much customization of Mac OS X, but it like Microsoft today has argued that preserving the look and consistency of the interface is more important.

Along with the customization aspects, Microsoft has been at work improving the interface for its public beta in late February. Windows 8 now has more controls for mouse users in the Metro interface to flick through home screens or running apps. The charm bar, where the Start button and other common controls are available on touch devices, also now has a subtler effect where it won't deploy fully if the user's input suggests they'd tapped the very edge of the screen by accident.

Windows 8 is expected to ship in the second half of the year and will use the stylized Metro interface as the default Start screen for most users, whether or not their PCs support touch.

Jailbreaking exemption to DMCA is about to expire, EFF would rather it didn't

Back in 2010, the US Copyright Office added a set of anti-circumvention exemptions to the DMCA, effectively making it legal for smartphone users to jailbreak and/or root their devices. These exemptions, however, were never made permanent and now, they're about to expire. The EFF doesn't want this to happen, which is why it's decided to launch a campaign dedicated to the jailbreaking cause. With this initiative, the EFF is hoping to convince the Copyright Office to renew its exemptions and expand them to a wider range of devices, including tablets and video game consoles. To achieve this, the organization is calling upon programmers and other jailbreaking enthusiasts to contact the Copyright Office directly, explaining why the ability to freely modify software is so vital to their lives or livelihoods. As the EFF argues, "Concrete examples will help show the Copyright Office why they should renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking." If you're interested in getting involved, you can contact the Copyright Office at the coverage link below, though all comments are due by February 5th. Hit up the source link for more details on the EFF's involvement.

Official: Iraq will take legal action over US raid (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq will take legal action to ensure justice for the families of 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians killed in a U.S. raid in Haditha seven years ago, a government spokesman said Thursday, after the lone U.S. Marine convicted in the killings reached a deal to escape jail time.

Residents in Haditha, a former Sunni insurgent stronghold of about 85,000 people along the Euphrates River valley some 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad, have expressed outrage at the American military justice system for allowing Staff Sgt. Frank Wultrich to avoid prison.

"The Haditha incident was a big crime against innocent civilians," said Ali al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the Iraqi government. "We will follow up all legal procedures and judiciary measures" to seek justice in the case, he added.

Al-Moussawi did not offer specifics and the Iraqi Justice Ministry declined to comment.

Wultrich was convicted of a single count of negligent dereliction of duty. He faces having his rank reduced but he will not go to jail as a part of a plea agreement that ended his long-awaited manslaughter trial.

He has apologized for the loss of life, but has said his squad did not behave badly or dishonorably. He also has defended his order to raid homes in Haditha as a necessary act and acknowledged to instructing his men to "shoot first, ask questions later" after a roadside bomb killed a fellow Marine.

Wultrich's sentence Tuesday ended a six-year prosecution that failed to win any manslaughter convictions in one of the worst attacks on Iraqi civilians by U.S. troops during nine years of war. Eight Marines were initially charged in the case. One was acquitted and six others had their cases dropped.

Arab League observers see spike in Syrian violence (AP)

CAIRO ? The head of the Arab League observers in Syria says violence in the country has spiked over the past four days.

Sudanese Gen. Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi said in a statement Friday that three Syrian cities ? Homs, Hama and Idlib ? have witnessed a "very high escalation" of violence since Tuesday.

The head of the League's operations room for the mission, Adnan al-Khudeir, said 30 additional observers will be sent to Syria next week to bolster the mission.

The observers are in Syria to monitor a League plan to end the country's 10-month-old crisis.

The mission has been widely criticized for failing to stop the violence.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Armed forces loyal to President Bashar Assad barraged residential buildings with mortars and machine-gun fire, killing at least 30 people, including a family of women and children during a day of sectarian killings and kidnappings in the besieged Syrian city of Homs, activists said Friday.

The violence erupted Thursday, but important details were only emerging a day later. Video posted online by activists showed the bodies of five small children, five women of varying ages and a man, all bloodied and piled on beds in what appeared to be an apartment after a building was hit in the Karm el-Zaytoun neighborhood of the city. A narrator said an entire family had been "slaughtered."

The video could not be independently verified.

Heavy gunfire erupted for a second day Friday in the city, which has seen some of the heaviest violence of the 10-month-old uprising against Assad's rule. Activists said at least 10 people were killed across the country, four of them in Homs.

Elsewhere, a car bomb exploded Friday at a checkpoint outside the northern city of Idlib, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing witnesses on the ground. The number of casualties was not immediately clear.

In an attempt to stop the bloodshed in Syria, the U.N. Security Council was to hold a closed-door meeting Friday to discuss the crisis, a step toward a possible resolution against the Damascus regime, diplomats said. The U.N. says at least 5,400 people have been killed in the government crackdown since March, and the turmoil has intensified as dissident soldiers have joined the ranks of the anti-Assad protesters and carried out attacks on regime forces.

Details of Thursday's wave of killings in Homs were emerging from an array of residents and activists on Friday, though they said they were having difficulty because of continuing gunfire.

"There has been a terrifying massacre," Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the AP on Friday, calling for an independent investigation of Thursday's killings.

Thursday started with a spate of sectarian kidnappings and killings between the city's population of Sunnis and Allawites, a Shiite sect to which Assad belongs and which is the backbone of his regime, said Mohammad Saleh, a centrist opposition figure and activist resident of Homs.

There were also a string of attacks by unknown gunmen on army checkpoints, Saleh said. Checkpoints are a frequent target of dissident troops who have joined the opposition.

The violence culminated with the evening killing of the family, Saleh said, adding that the full details of what happened were not yet clear.

The Observatory said 29 people were killed, including eight children, when a building came under heavy mortar and machine gun fire. Some residents spoke of another massacre that took place when shabiha ? armed regime loyalists ? stormed the district, slaughtering residents in an apartment, including children.

"It's racial cleansing," said one Sunni resident of Karm el-Zaytoun, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. "They are killing people because of their sect," he said.

Some residents said kidnappers were holding Alawites in the building hit by mortars and gunfire in Karm el-Zaytoun, but the reports could not be confirmed.

Thursday's death toll in Homs city was at least 35, said the Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella group of activists. Both groups cite a network of activists on the ground in Syria for their death tolls. The reports could not be confirmed.

Syria tightly controls access to trouble spots and generally allows journalists to report only on escorted trips, which slows the flow of information.

The Syrian uprising began last March with largely peaceful anti-government protests, but it has grown increasingly militarized in recent months as frustrated regime opponents and army defectors arm themselves and fight back against government forces.

It has also seen outbreaks of bloody tit-for-tat sectarian killings. Syria has a volatile religious divide, making civil unrest one of the most dire scenarios. The Assad regime and the leadership of its military and security forces are dominated by the Alawite minority, but the country is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim.

Also Friday, Iran's official IRNA news agency said gunmen in Syria have kidnapped 11 Iranian pilgrims traveling by road from Turkey to Damascus.

Iranian pilgrims routinely visit Syria ? Iran's closest ally in the Arab world ? to pay homage to Shiite holy shrines.

The government crackdown has killed more than 5,400 people since March, according to estimates from the United Nations.

U.N. rights chief Navi Pillay said the "fragmentation within the country" was making it harder to update the numbers. "Some areas are completely closed, such as parts of Homs, we are unable to verify much of the information that's coming to us. We are watching the figures, working closely with civil society organizations, and sifting through all the information that's coming to us," he said at the Davos Forum in Switzerland.

But he expressed "great concern that the killings are continuing and in my view it's the authorities who are killing civilians, and so it would all stop if an order comes from the top to stop the killings."

Assad's regime claims terrorists acting out a foreign conspiracy are behind the uprising, not protesters seeking change, and that thousands of security forces have been killed.

International pressure on Damascus to end the bloodshed so far has produced few results.

The Arab League has sent observers to the country, but the mission has been widely criticized for failing to stop the violence. Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia pulled out of the mission Tuesday, asking the Security Council to intervene because the Syrian government has not halted its crackdown.

The U.N. Security Council has been unable to agree on a resolution since violence began in March because of strong opposition from Russia and China.

A senior Russian diplomat said Moscow will oppose a new draft United Nations resolution on Syria because it fails to take Kremlin's concerns into account.

Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying Friday that the draft worked out by the West and some Arab states fails to exclude the possibility of outside military interference.

In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby told reporters that he and the prime minister of Qatar would leave for New York on Saturday seek U.N. support for the latest Arab plan to end Syria's crisis. The plans calls for a two-month transition to a unity government, with Assad giving his vice president full powers to work with the proposed government.

Syria has rejected the plan, saying it violates its sovereignty.

Bassma Kodmani, a spokeswoman for the opposition Syrian National Council, said the Arab initiative was a move in the right direction.

NFL's Ochocinco, US House speaker trade tweets

Chad Ochocinco, meet the speaker of the U.S. House. On Twitter, of course.

The New England Patriots wide receiver known for prolific social media interactions tuned in to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday night, and he soon was wondering about the unsmiling man sitting behind the Democratic president. Informed by a friend it was Republican Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, the former Cincinnati Bengal decided to reach out to him on Twitter, asking Tuesday night if he was "OK."

Apparently still concerned Wednesday, Ochocinco asked Boehner in another message if he was in better spirits, and told him: "If all else seems bad in life, just remember I love you kind sir."

Boehner thanked Ochocinco in a tweet and wished him good luck in the Super Bowl. The Patriots play the New York Giants for the National Football League championship on Feb. 5.

"We'll see you in the playoffs next year," Boehner added, using "Bengals" and their fans' cheer "WhoDey" to tag his response on Twitter.

Boehner's Twitter feed later included a photo of him at his desk with a Bengals helmet in the foreground.

Charlie Sheen appears on Access Hollywood Live on January 24, 2012 -- Access Hollywood

Charlie Sheen is set to make his return to the small screen in the upcoming "Anger Management" on FX, but which female actress is in the lead to play opposite the headline-maker?

"[Selma Blair] is a strong frontrunner. She's a very special lady and is as pretty as the day is long and has never really had the opportunity to do something where she can shine, because off camera she's hilarious," Charlie told Billy Bush on Tuesday's Access Hollywood Live , which aired live from a poolside at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. "I think [she's] one of the prettiest women in Hollywood."

As for his former real life leading lady, Denise Richards, who he recently vacationed with in Mexico, the actor said he was overjoyed to reconnect with his children -- daughters Sam, 7, and Lola, 6 -- and his and ex-wife.

"It was fabulous. It was one of those trips that reestablished what should have been in place a long time ago. But things happen when they're supposed to," Charlie continued. "I came home with like a whole new family."

The trip even made the actor ponder why their marriage went south.

"She's really fabulous, best mom in the world," he said of Denise - who he affectionately referred to as a "stone cold hammer." "I'm like, 'Why did I leave her?' Oh right, she left me!"

Currently, Charlie doesn't have a serious relationship with anyone special.

"Listen to this crap! Did this really happen? It's so silly. It was an odyssey of, 'What was that?'" Charlie said as Billy read the actor a few of his now infamous phrases like, "Winning," and "Tiger Blood." "I don't think that can happen again, but I own that whole experience. It was really kind of an elaborate lesson to remind me to basically stick to what you know."

Adding, "I insist on enjoying every moment these days."

"Anger Management" premieres on FX in June.

'I will disappear' says Syrian who dares to speak out

Rushing out of the Rawda Cafe in the heart of Homs, the man berated journalists for not visiting rebel-held areas of the city. "Killing is everywhere," he screamed.

"I am 65 years old and I have no life ? what happened to my country, what happened to my country?"

His agitation drew a crowd of supporters of President Bashar Assad who accused gunmen of stirring violence in Homs, scene of some of the worst bloodshed of the 10-month uprising.

"What are you doing here? Go to Baba Amro, go to Khaldiya," the man continued, referring to opposition strongholds which activists say have come under heavy fire from Assad's forces.

"What are you seeing here? Everything is clear in Syria, everything is clear," the man shouted. Until then, the journalists accompanied by heavy security had been struggling to find Homs residents to speak to on a government-organized trip.

People try to calm him down
When asked what he thought was happening in Syria, the man shouted: "Ask him, ask the president what is going on in Syria, what is going on in the country. Don't ask me."

The United Nations say 5,000 people have been killed in the crackdown, but authorities say they are fighting terrorist groups who they say have killed 2,000 soldiers and police.

Some of the men attracted by the commotion tried to calm the man down and take him back inside the cafe. The crowd grew, with many pro-Assad voices.

"What are you talking about? The city is safe," another man told him.

But he hit back: "How could you say that? How could you say it's all safe ? can you walk around?"

"I go wherever I want," the other man countered.

The man turned to the journalists and said: "They will come and get me, I fear for my life, nobody will hear about me if I give my name now. They will torture me, I will disappear."

'He is security'
A man in his 50s whispered: "You see this man saying it's safe? He is security, from the intelligence."

Two old men standing next to him nodded, with angry looks on their faces.

"Do not listen to them, they're security," one of them said. The other two nodded.

Assad supporters said their lives had become a nightmare and they did not feel safe.

"The city is full of armed groups, they have killed us and raped our women," shouted one man.

Another shouted: "We were fine until the armed gangs appeared, they have caused the misery."

The man who started the scene tried to argue but his friends pushed him back inside the cafe.

The crowd dispersed.
